Not necessarily.
I wouldn't mind a trade back scenaio that lands us Taylor,, Dillard, Jonah Williams or Ford.
Part of what drives my concern is this team's persistent failure to acquire a stud RT in the 2nd round or lower throughout its history.
The only RT we've been successful drafting was Maurice Williams way back in 2001. Now if you want to classify Cam Robinson as a RT, I may be willing to consider that. But even taking that at face value, that's still only two in 25 years. Britton was a failure, as was Bryan DeMarco. Mike Pearson was meh at best at LT, and was nowhere physical enough to be a RT. Khalif Barnes had a year of quality play for us then flamed out.
In the 3rd round we have managed to find the occasional guard (Manwai, Linder, Cann).
To date, tje only lineman we have successfully found after the 3rd round was Bowanko.

Why risk the health of our QB and the effectiveness of the offense trying to be cute or greedy on draft day?
Historically, if we don't get a RT by round two, forget it.

If they like Gary out of Michigan or even Oliver out of Houston it wouldn't shock me at all. Especially with Campbell up in age and with Ngakoue's contract up you just never know what these guys want to do. My dark horse pick is Devin White at ILB. I actually really like that pick if he's the BAP on the board. Move him inside and put Jack back outside where his speed and hitting ability our better suited. White is a natural inside. And he's a physical freak. Would be a good look.
I have also been enamored with the idea of drafting him and moving Jack back outside where he was more effective. It's a double improvement and that defense would then be tight as a drum.
OT, TE, WR, then BAP S/DL/QB after that.
While this makes the most sense from a needs perspective, I can't help but shake the feeling that Hockenson is simply a flat out much better player than Taylor. I hated watching Gene Smith fail time and time again by reaching in round one to fill a need over better players. Getting Hockenson would give us an immediate impact starter who just might quickly develop into the league's next Zach Ertz with Foles throwing to him. Moreover, he projects to step in as a dominant, polished run blocker as a rookie, and that would help to feed the Jaguars run-first identity. Provided we can still get one of those other two RTs in round two, both of whom project to start, I feel like the team would be better off overall.
That said, should the team pass on Hockenson in round one, it's hard to say when we address the TE spot. If that's the case we're surely going Taylor at RT round one unless they surprise and go WR with a Marquise Brown or DK Metcalf, although all of these names might still be there after a small trade down. Hockenson, on the other hand, is likely going top 10 so we'd either have to take him at #7 or else probably go another season without a true stud at the TE spot (unless perhaps we trade down get Fant).
Man I hope we take Hockenson

TE is just as much of a need as RT is imo
Hock vs Taylor is no contest. Hock vs Oliver/Sweat/Burns/Haskins/Dillard though...
I need to watch Warring now, he slipped through the cracks for me.. I've seen a bunch of people put him in the Knox/Sternberger tier in the last few days.

He's all upside, barely even has a ceiling. Which is wonderful, but I'm not sure if he'd be able to contribute right away at a position with a steep learning curve.
Yeah Warring strikes me as the classic raw TE who winds up flourishing w/ his second team.
I'd say we need to have an elite weapon in the passing game. We have a bunch of middling or worse guys at this point. I'm all about TJ, and he adds production in the run game as well.

I would be fine with Hockenson or Fant at 7, with the caveat that the team needs to be prepared to trade back up into the bottom of the 1st round to ensure a guy like McGary is our RT. To that end, I would be prepared to give up our pick at the bottom of the 3rd or the 4th round pick to do that.
Gronk was a second-round pick.
Tony Gonzalez was a first-round pick.
Jimmy Graham was a third-round pick.
Shannon Sharpe was a big, slow wide receiver drafted in the seventh round.
Antonio Gates was a basketball player brought in as camp fodder.
Point being, yes, you can find tight ends in the first round, but you've also got a really good shot at finding them later. Would I draft a tight end in the top ten? Sure, if I have a time machine that can take me back in time to 2010 so I can bring Gronk to Jacksonville.
Fun fact of the day: we drafted Tyson Alualu in the first round in 2010.

Alualu is a classic example of why you don't want to reach in round one. Hockenson would not be a reach as he's a top 10 guy. Jackson? He might be the best RT at a position of dire need, but he's at least a slight reach. Dude should go like #15 to #20.

I have heard the phrase "much better than Kittle" when talking about Hockenson.
Interesting how high he's got Dawson Knox ranked. Isn't that the guy the Jaguars were said to be looking at?
He's only got like 5 highlight-reel plays tho, but otherwise very intriguing. The Patriots are talking about him potentially replacing Gronk.

Who's Jackson?

It goes like this:
True TE Go TE
1. T.J. Hockenson 1. Noah Fant
2. Irv Smith 2. Jace Sternberger
3. Dawson Knox
4. Dax Raymond
5. Kahale Warring
We need two TEs out of this bunch. One true and one go.
Ideally a trade with Cincinnati would be perfect. Grab an extra second and take Hockenson. I don't see Hockenson making it past Green Bay.

I'd slight Knox to the True side. The guy is a really good blocker and has a good frame.
Knox is an excellent run blocker, and Fant is very capable at blocking too. They're both absolutely complete TE to me.

You have to be able to block if you want to play TE at Iowa.

I love Hockenson as a player, but I can’t shake the feeling that a TE that high would be an error. As the article states, historically TEs don’t come into their prime until their 2nd contracts (fingers crossed Swaim fits this bill), and investing a first in a TE and expecting immediate results is probably a fools game.
I’m increasingly thinking we will go o-line or d-line in the first, with a TE coming in round 2 or 3.
If you believe the TE will be a future all pro then he absolutely would be worth investing a first. Just my thoughts...

Of course, same goes for any position and player in the draft. The interesting questions might pop up if they have that 'future all-pro' belief about several players, for example Sweat, Oliver and Hockenson, and they are all available at 7.... Then what?
