Hopefully everyone is celebrating with good food, good beverages, and good friends!
Justin Amash chose to celebrate by declaring himself independent from the Republican Party.
As a fellow Republican, this disappoints me, but I get it.
He's trying to avoid the Republican primary. Voters in his district will now see a three way race for their 2020 House election: a Republican, Amash, and a Democrat.
To me, this is all silly. Amash didn't change. He's still going to vote with Republicans almost all of the time. He just disagrees with most Republicans about Trump.
If Michigan had non-partisan primaries like CA, LA, or WA, Amash would still be a Republican today. It's silly that party affiliation becomes about rules, strategy, and personality more than about policy.
