Just a fun offseason thread to gauge fans' outlook.

List 4 things about the 2019 Jaguars that give you optimism, and four things that give you concern.

UP:
  • Having a QB who can get the ball out on time, look off defenders, and deliver more accurately
  • Fournette catching the ball in space in Flip's offense
  • Dede Westbrook poised to have a breakout season
  • Assuming Ngakoue is in the fold, a pass rush that will torment quarterbacks
DOWN:
  • Counting on a rookie a WLB
  • Offensive line health, especially Robinson
  • Is Jarrod Wilson ready? - and will one or both of the safeties prove trustworthy in single-high when needed?
  • Will Foles be durable enough to last a season?

Nice idea NYC, hope you've had a good summer. My list would be pretty similar

Up
1- A proper QB. Its been so long since we've had one we've forgotten how much of a difference it makes.
2- One of those WR's is going to breakout. Dede, Chark, Cole; Conley, Lee, Pryor, one will be a stud
3- That D line. We can have so many looks and schemes, they should wreck havoc
4- Jalen playing on a 'contract' year, I know it's not technically, but hes going to put on a show this year.

Down
1- LB depth. We were weak before we lost Telvin, a captain and our D leader. Huge chance for rookies.
2- Safety depth. I like Harrison and Wilson but teams will target them over Bouye and Jalen. Need a big year
3- O health. We dont have the depth to overcome too many injuries across the board
4- The team fighting together through adversity. No more finger pointing and let's tank for draft spots.
FOUR UPPERS:
Nick Foles at QB - Should be better under pressure and at least more accurate at the position.
Josh Allen at DE - We stole him in the draft. Hopefully he's in the run for DROY.
Josh Oliver at TE - I liked him going into the draft. Glad we got him in RD3. Foles and Flip love the TE position. By mid season I wouldn't be surprised if he's a focal point of the offense.
Jawaan Taylor at RT - Another steal. All reports indicate so far that he's moving along rather quickly. Excited to see him in the line-up.

FOUR DOWNERS:
Inexperience at FS & SS - Wilson and Harrison will have a lot on their plates this year. As long as Bouye & Ramsey can stay relatively healthy and don't miss any time at an extensive period they should be okay on the back end.
Inexperience at WLB & SLB - Jack being in the middle this year will have to really keep Williams and Jacobs or whomever opposite of him in check at times this year. Concerned with missed tackles and bites on fakes for sure this year.
Offensive Line Long Term Health Concerns - Linder has yet to play a full season. Robinson is coming off an ACL. Norwell didn't fair that well at all last year as our blockbuster signing. Really need this trio to stay relatively healthy to succeed as an offense.
Contract Negotiations And Extension Concerns - I think the deals will be done for Ngakoue and potentially Ramsey. Still don't like seeing the headline and distractions in the media.
Great Idea!!!
UP
1. Dede continuing to play better and better.
2. Fournette having a new coordinator on Offense that wont run him all game long and use more balance to switch it up. Offense could take off with the Defense not sitting on routes(10 yrds or less) and loading the box.
3. Oline getting back healthy with a RT that could develop into a solid starter.
4. Having a pass catching TE who hopefully will thrive with a QB who loves to throw to TE.

Down
1. LB core outside of Myles Jack.
2. One decent safety who is still rising and another who I hope can fit right in and not miss a beat...idk
3. Foles staying healthy all year and not breaking.
4. DL making it work with Bryan.
UP:
1) Soon enough I can watch football again. This always makes me smile.
2) We can't *possibly* have as many injuries as we did last year, right?
3) Talented rosters breed competition. We will see guys elevate their game to get on the field, or stay there.
4) I really think the team itself did not believe in Bortles at QB. They have no excuse now, and I believe they will be motivated to move on from that chapter.

Down:
1) The LB position is going to be a liability.
2) Are guys more concerned with contracts than their on-field performance?
3) Which Foles do we get from one week to the next?
4) Is Marrone and his staff good enough to get us back in the playoffs, or was 2017 a fluke?
Uppers

Obviously QB - Finally got a solid QB

RB - I think I was a year too soon on my prediction for LF, I think he can lead the league in rushing and have about 15 TDs

Oline - I’m not worried at all about our Oline, Linder is back, Robinson is back, Cann is back and Taylor will strive and of course Norwell will do his job.

Jalen Ramsey and Bouye - I’m so glad we don’t have to face this guy. He makes the entire secondary elite. Bouye feeds off of Ramsey’s confidence. And without a bonafide FS, these guys will make up for it. People talk about Campbell being up there with the best FA we ever signed but so is AJ Bouye.

Downers

Holdout - I really hope this doesn’t derail Yannick’s season and/or career. Sometimes guys get caught up in the business side of things and stuff gets sour. I hope he has 18 sacks this year.

LB - Myles Jack is the man, but he needs his running mate Telvin Smith beside him. Ryan had a set back and that hurts us at LB. I hope we did our homework on QWilliams, bc were gonna need him to step up big time.

WR - even without reading that article that the Jaguars have the worst WR group in the league, WE ALL knew this deep down. Westbrook is our best WR but he is not a WR1. Pryor can be that guy in the red zone but we’re lacking at this position. Despite having the only 2 WRs to post 1,000 yards receiving in a season other than Jimmy Smith.

FS - Our CBs can camouflage this some but I hope whoever wins the job can be like a Sammy Knight or a Deon Grant type of player. Just do your job and let the other guys fly around and make plays. Don’t get beat deep.

Note - I’m excited to see what Armstead can do in Yeldon’s place behind Fournette.
Pros
- New QB
- DBs
- New OC (downfield passing - less predictability)
- OL semi-healthy once again

Cons
- No cohesiveness between QBs and receiving core. --- this usually takes a year or 2.
- TEs suck
- LBs suck
- Too many new parts on O and D lead to finger pointing when players are out of place or run wrong routes.
I disagree about our TE’s sucking. I think we’re better at that position than ever before, except for Mitchell and Brady.

Outside of 2010 Lewis was pedestrian.

Swain is a decent player and Oliver gives us that mismatch we’ve been lacking for so many years at TE. If he gets up on a LB, it’s 6 points to the house.

* NF7
* Offensive line health and new addition at RT.
* WR Corp. I feel that we have the receivers necessary to stretch the field and cross the middle.
* The potential of better play calling from our new OC.
* The addition of Allen at an needed position.
* The addition or Armstead at another needed position.
The addition of an receiving TE.
* The addition of. Wait!!!  1.2.3.4.5.6.7? My Bad y'all, I got carried away. SMH.

#DOWNaWownie...

* Taven Brian was on the ground too much in the first padded practice. The OL owned him.
* Not necessarily an downer BUT, Williams maybe our best choice at the WLB position as an rookie. I have confidence but we need him to set the stage.
* Again not an downer, BUT our two new starting young safeties has to materialize, cincronize, quickly. The word is that it's already in motion. Thank You Jesus.
* Blitz Packaging. We need more of this and we need it now.

Time Will Tell.

One time I was in a job interview. The interviewer asked me to describe myself in one word. I said, "Poor at following directions."

Since this is a popular choice for concern in this and other threads, I thought I'd mention that I've been getting a strong vibe from Marrone and Wash that these safeties will be used interchangeably. Wash started beating the drum months ago and Marrone echoed those hints recently.

I think we'll see less use of the single high safety and more use of a Cover 4/Quarters sets on passing downs.  This allows the corners to play man concepts while the safeties play zone concepts that have some versatility.

Oehser was asked about this recently and he thought it was indeed a possibility and Prisco was saying the same thing yesterday on the radio.

I think this adjustment is going to give Harrison (and Wilson) more opportunities to jump routes - especially when the pass rush influences the QB's timing.
