The damning thing for me, how few guys sign second contracts with us. Either by leaving or not being good enough, we haven't had enough of a solid core and depth of quality players so we can draft or FA a few specific positions to keep us competing.

I agree completely.

People here act as if superstar caliber players grow on trees.

Exactly. Its heartbreaking. We had the O all set up with Hurns and Robinson and Bortles, all gone.

We've got the D set with Yannick, Jack, Telvin and Ramsey. Looks like well be down to 2 of them soon, maybe even less.

We have had the key young pieces to build a team around but they all end up leaving.

And the cycle repeats. Sigh.

Forgive me if I’ve misunderstood, but are you suggesting that Bortles was our franchise QB, and that we’ve missed out by letting him leave?
Get rid of Moron, Wash, Caldwell, Coughlin.

Yeah that's my bad. I meant more a high draft pick on our 'franchise' QB. Spend 4 seasons up and down with him then move on and look for the next big thing.

In 2015 it looked like we had the O ready.

Especially since so many of them were the first players at their position taken. It has to look worse when you have your pick of every single QB or RB in the draft and you miss that badly.

Let's look at those 7 draft picks: (2 of 7 is about league average for 'great players' taken in the first round btw.  About 1/3rd of first rounders over the last 10 years have become great players.)

2013 - Luke Joeckel - Awful pick.  Should've taken Lane Johnson.  But let's be honest about this -- most people were pretty hyped about the Joeckel pick.  Many predicted him to go #1 overall.  I think it's a mistake most GM's would've made in the same position.

2014 - Blake Bortles.  First QB taken, but the next one taken was... Johnny Manziel.  Then Teddy Bridgewater (who hasn't exactly lit the world on fire either), and Derek Carr and Jimmy Garappolo.  It's always bad to miss on a QB.  Bortles played well enough, though, for us to make an AFC Championship game.  (And would've been a Super Bowl if the refs weren't BLIND).  If he could've cut back on the INT's, I think he'd still be on the team.

2015 - Dante Fowler Jr - A pretty solid player, honestly.  Would we be better off with Leonard Williams?  Sure.  But Fowler wasn't really a bad pick.

2016 - Jalen Ramsey - Star player.

2017 - Leonard Fournette - No idea why you take an RB in the first round.   Bad decision by Caldwell, seemingly spurred by the fact that we decided to build a team that's meant to play in the 90's rather than the 2000's.

2018 - Taven Bryan - ANother choice that (so far) hasn't really panned out.  Wasn't a terrible pick on paper, but yeah.

2019 - Josh Allen - Could be a Star Player.

Not too bad of a record, really.  Could be a lot better.  But it's not a disaster.  I'm not saying "Keep Caldwell and Coughlin" around.  I don't think they want to build the team as a modern football team (which I think is their biggest folly).  But we could (and have in the past) do a lot worse.
Under the Caldwell/Coughlin era the only first rounder that really irks me badly is the Fournette pick.
Taven Bryan is second, but it was a late rounder and may eventually have some value still. (crossing all fingers and toes)

The others all made sense for various reasons and none were considered poor value at their spots by the majority of analysts on draft day.

I'm not even going to get into the Gene Smith picks. Ugh.
