I watched the first half of the Jets- Pats game Monday night. Sam Darnold ended up throwing 4 interceptions, lost a fumble, and his passer rating was in single digits. The Jets defense looked like they were playing prevent defense right from the kickoff. The fans were booing from the first quarter on. The Jets have a short week to get ready for the Jags, and they have to travel. Darnold apparently sustained a toe injury. The Jets injury list is as bad as the Bengals was.
So why worry about this upcoming game?
Two reasons. First, the Jags are coming off a victory against a winless Bengals team, and the game was close well into the third quarter. It could have gone either way absent the turnovers. The win came at a time when the team was desperate to get a victory and the Bengals were the perfect cure for that desperation. The Jags celebrated that victory, and some of the pressure was relieved. Historically, the Jags suffer a letdown after a win. Consistency has been a problem for this team. I worry about a letdown this week.
Secondly, the Jets were flat out embarrassed against the Patriots. They couldn’t even slow Brady down, much less stop him. Their offense was impotent. These guys are professionals, and I expect they will come out of the gate ready for a fight.
I’m hoping our coaches can get the players’ minds right for this game. If they don’t, this could be a very depressing loss.
