So......

I think a lot of us 1st saw a problem in Week 3 of the preseason.

The Jags came out flat, got owned, and couldn't do ANYTHING.

After a offseason of hype (pretty justified, really, considering the individual improvements)......once the team is faced with a high-level team, a measuring stick type game (3rd preseason game or not....it certainly looked like the Bengals were there to play).  Not only that, but it FELT like there was a flatness, a lack of momentum, and everything being out of sync.  From the attitudes to the penalties, to everything being just off.

What changed?  Where did the offseason of optimism, expectations, and improvement go?  Where was the focus, the overall attitude of being on the cusp, the "we're ready to break through" mantra go... from the top of the organization to the bottom?  Why is the team right now in a near revolt, talking about the game plan, to the play calling, etc..?

Here's my thought- I think that SOMETHING big changed in the approach.  I think that Gus has spent 3 1/2 years being the, "We just need to get better every day...forget the score....etc.."  Being positive at all costs, imparting an underlying message (echoed by the organization, from owner to GM) that we weren't going to win a lot of games, so it is relatively pressure free, like playing with house money.

Now, Gus, I think, has reacted to REAL expectations.  Real pressure to win, and win NOW.  I think he has attempted a shift, from Good Guy coach, to Tough (Tougher) Leader, and there is a backlash, whether it is conscious or not.  Suddenly, from the Head Coach down, it isn't just about getting better, it is about results.  And the pressure builds, and builds, and so on.

I find it hard to believe that it is just a talent issue, and there is something far deeper going on here.

So, in sum, I think what we MAY BE SEEING is a failure to shift from Nice Guy to Tough Guy, which rarely works anyway.

Any thoughts on this?

So basically Gus ain't a "day one"

I honestly think with social media and "comment sections" that our players know Gus is not a good coach. They are just going through the motions.

Our players are only human. They know Myles Jack being on the bench is just crazy. They know Gus has only won 12 games.

They are tired of losing, and I bet if you took an anonymous poll in the locker room it would show none of them want him as our coach.

Period. Gus Bradley has lost the locker room.
I thought about this today, back to the 3rd preseason game, although not as in depth. Good post. Players sure are playing like they don't respect Gus.

I hear you, but to me, something changed going into that game, that you could see and feel in the body language, attitude, etc. from the team of that Preseason game.

It was on a stage, a barometer, a game they could have showed they were ready for prime time, and they showed no motivation to do that.

Weeks 1 & 2 looked much different.  And it was from the 1st snap on.
Ah bum if you do, bum if you don't.

Preach winning is a result not the goal = Gus doesn't care about wins.

We have to win now = Gus lost the locker room

The Colts are going to destroy us this weekend too I'm afraid....Hopefully Blake doesn't get locked up for egregious acts of fumble-atio after he commits 12 turnovers and loses the game in the 2nd qtr for us. Screw it I'm sleeping in. Screw gus bradley, screw the jaguars, screw Jason Myers and everyone pretending to block on that field goal attempt, and screw the steal the show lady.

You have lost your composure. Did they finally break ya?

As I sat in the stadium in San Diego, witnessing first hand the 2nd major west coast massacre of the last half decade or so, and at the expense of my football fanhood dignity, yeah, I'd say I've come to adopt a pessimistic view of said team I was chosen to root for.

Don't worry, I was [BAD WORD REMOVED] wasted by the 2nd quarter.

You went to the Seahawks game too. Man, I think you're the problem! Don't ever go to another game!

I left the game I paid nearly 500 bucks for me and my buddy to go to with around 12 minutes to go in the 3rd qtr.

Edit:and that was just mostly out of fear of running into chargers fans I had boldly/idiotically talked smack to during pregame.

This team is flat out, 100 percent embarrassing to support at times.

And yea I drank a ton of 13 dollar friggin shock tops. 13 dollars per. At least point a gun at me San diego.

Yea I painted my face and chest teal and black and went shirtless for that 41-0 embarassment. I sat through the whole game in "the Hawks nest" bc of untimely scalped tickets also. I was young then. I leave shortly after halftime now.

Don't worry buddy, one day we'll be able to blow teams out like the Chargers, and we can smack talk all day. Too much talent for it not to happen in the near future.
I think it's simpler than that. I think the Jags coaching staff doesn't know how to scout the opponent and take advantage of weaknesses. It seems the opponent always knows what plays we're going to run and what defense we'll be in.

I agree that he has tried to change from the ice cream happy go lucky guy to an actual serious coach.  However, it was evident to me at the end of his 1st season that he can't "coach 'em up" so to speak.  As in, he has NEVER gotten his players to perform at or above their potential as a collective group.

Nicest guy in the world, but does not have the leadership required to be a successful NFL HC.

I'd say you're absolutely right.

1. Gus didn't create an strong enough expectation for what was and wasn't acceptable. There was no level of excellence. He has been inconsistent with his message.

2. Now he's bipolar every week almost. After GB he was heated. After SD he was complacent. After BT he was a mixture of the two.

3. It's teaching 101 to harp on and DEMAND what is and isn't acceptable from DAY ONE. Not 4 years into your teaching. Creates a mixed response within your students

Baltimore or Green Bay always knew what defense we'd be in?
He may be a nice guy and that could be his downfall. Maybe it's just me, but as a leader, he really does seem to have a hands off approach. I understand letting our coaches coach and everyone handle their individual responsibilities, but Gus seems so disconnected. How many times have we seen during interview the glance to the side of the room with an "I don't know"? How many times have we heard, "I'll have to look at the tape". Man, you were there on the sideline. Did you not see the play? Did you not see the injury? It is usually a huge faux pas, but I'd liked to see evidence of a bit more engagement and even micromanagement. Get in there man!!!

Players are looking out for their own welfare, gaetting clobbered week in, week out is hurting some of their stock
