BTW anyone know what happened to Stormy? Just remembered her.

Um, I'm a girl. The heck kind of dude would have a name like americus 2.0? I'd beat his [BLEEP]. Lol. I was around the mid-2000s as just "americus" but left for about seven years to deal with life. Couldn't remember my login info, thus the 2.0.

Stormy lives here in NC but I'm not sure where. Maybe outside Charlotte. She's doing good the last I heard but it's been a year or so since we last communicated.

A Stormy who lives in NC and loves the Jaguars? Does she also love CrossFit?
The Good

We are getting Football despite everyone doing there darnedest to kill sports.

The Bad

We are a bad team with an accurate assessment of 20 years of misery.

The Ugly

Same people are running the show and seem to be lined up to screw up my 2021 as well.

Honestly I've been waiting for the pessimistic folks on this board (lately includes me) to be wrong at some point. Please stop pointing to 2017 because that was a mirage and was massively up and down all year. Even while it was happening it didn't seem like a superbowl team.
The Good
Every day is one day closer to the end of the season, and hopefully a major overhaul of leadership
The Bad
Holy farts this roster
The Ugly
Week 1 football, I suspect

Publicly

Insubordinate (Fournette), criminal (T. Smith), blatant liar (Ramsey), disrespectful- all of them, and others I'm sure. Tell me these things are not a factor along with everything else I listed above.

While the team certainly can't be blamed for Telvin Smith's plunge into criminality, I DO believe they bear some responsibility into the state of the locer room.  That said, there is no way I blame Caldwell for drafting those guys in the first place.

Everyone knows I am no huge fan of Vic Ketchman, but he had a quote that he used often I think is appropriate:  "Football is not a game for the well adjusted."

This isn't to say that all football players are completely dysfunctional, but if you are looking for complete angels in this business, you can forget it.  Plenty of teams- many of them championship caliber- have had talented guys  with flaws.

I obviously had another username but I've been here since 2001 and I kinda remember you, Stormy and a bunch of other people that I never see around here anymore.

Yeah..it caught me by surprise too.  All these years I'd seen Americus posting and I thought she was a dude.  Just found out last year or so.  Some good posters have stopped posting over the years.  How dare they get lives outside of this board!  IS that even allowed?!?   Laughing
I get what you're saying and yeah, I guess if we were winning the attitudes wouldn't  mean anything in the  big picture.

What was it that made you think I was a dude? I think it's funny. I am a tomboy and my husband sometimes kids me about having bigger balls than him (I'm just more assertive!) and I wear the pants in the marriage. Not true, we share those pants. Lol.

The marriage will usually be better and last longer with no pants.   Wink   Banana

The Good - Football is finally back.
The Bad - It just doesn't seem the same (at least for me).
The Ugly - Starting a roster with a lot of young players.  I hope that I am wrong about this.

Agreed completely about the good the bad and the ugly.

I'm almost always thinking or reading about or discussing debating football, and I am eager for the season to start.  Nut something is amiss, and the anticipation of a fundamentally different football season is a domineering mitigation of my excitement for the season.

I feel the same. I'm not sure if it's all the crazy of 2020 or the state of the team in light of all the changes, or that football is just going to look and feel very different this year, but I'm not as excited this year and it kind of sucks.
I'm going down with the ship. Hopefully our defense does not give up and plays hard. I'm excited about our offense but nervous. I will miss my favorite player #27. He brought a special attitude and toughness. I lived in tampa and never Jacksonville but I will remain loyal to my favorite team. I might have to get a fournette bucs Jersey though. I have to get a new jags jersey now since both Ramsey and fournette are gone. Smh

I'm starting to get a bit more excited about the season.  I do hope that after this first week the NFL decides to leave social issues/politics out of the sport.  I just want to watch them play.

On a side note, I watched some of the interviews on Jaguars.com and couldn't help but notice something.  I was kind of "reading between the lines" as well as looking at the body language of the players and coaches.  It pretty much confirmed to me that some of the players that are gone were not really "team" players, but more "me first" players.  It's kind of hard to describe, but it's almost like some players expected the team to be "like a Madden game" or something where "upgrades" could be just plugged in at any time.

When I say "me first" players it's not about individual stats, it's about winning.  I get the impression that some players expected the team to be like the Patriots of the past decade.  It appears to me that some players faulted other players for not being "good enough" as well as lashed out at the coaching staff and FO.

I am interested to see how the players react not only when they win, but when they lose.  Just my thoughts, but I think that some of the players that are gone have never had to lose and never had to actually work hard to win.  I think that some of those players never really had to overcome adversity in their lives.

I agree with you JIB. I'm actually glad we've gotten rid of players who aren't 100% invested in the team or its success.

I think it definitely sheds a light on a players disposition and mental fortitude whenever the team loses. Granted, some players who possess immense talent might not want to step into the leadership role that we might thrust them into.

With regards to your very last sentence, I think the vast majority come from a very challenging and difficult upbringing - and the fact that they were able to break through the barrier and become successful is certainly overcoming the odds. Of course, there are players who come from a very privileged background but I don't think this is the statistical norm.

To be fair, there are a variety of innate and environmental factors that play a role in shaping one's outlook and how they react to certain situations. One can certainly overcome real-life adversity and still come off as being brash.

Forgive me if I wasn't clear (and I wasn't) I was talking only football/sports related adversity.  I understand and realize that some of these players came up through hard times and adversity in life.  I believe that could just be "fuel to the fire".  They had a hard upbringing and suddenly have thousands/millions of dollars thrown at them along with the media spotlight.  All of the sudden they become "entitled to" more or that's how they feel.

It's all about the game though.  I seem to recall hearing some of the players that left saying "I want to win" during interviews.  Of course every player wants to win, but when they don't, that's what separates them.  Instead of learning from failure and working to correct it, they want an "immediate fix" by getting a different player or whatever.

No worries, its easy for things like that to happen through text-based conversations.

Yeah, I see what you mean now. That "I want to win" sentiment with those specific players is more of a "me > team" mentality - and that gives me a deeper appreciation for players like Megatron, Barry Sanders, etc.

Obviously, if they put in the time and effort for years and they decide to move on - that is perfectly ok with me. But what we saw here last season was very off-putting for me, especially when a player decides to willingly sit on the sidelines faking an injury while his teammates are out on the field putting it on the line.
I forgot a good...

I dont see us taking as many personal foul penalties this year
(09-03-2020, 11:00 PM)JagJohn Wrote: [ -> ]Here we are, one week away from the start of the regular season, and it seems like a good point to assess where this franchise stands right now. (Although, with the rate the Jags are making headlines this week this will probably all be obsolete by the time our first game arrives).

The Good: (and I understand most people are not remotely interested in hearing the good right now)

- The future could be bright. Obviously, this depends on how the FO handles things (which is a big doubt)... but we are in a position where we have some good young talent on the roster, and we are loaded with draft picks for next year. This is a key moment in Jags history, a legitimate opportunity to turn things around. We are entering a season where the young players on our roster are going to get a chance to shine, and we will have an opportunity to add to them via our massive draft capital and salary cap room next year. If managed right, there is huge potential for a team to be built correctly that can challenge for a long time to come.
- The offense could be better than expected this year. Maybe I'm being a fool, but a big part of me does believe that our offense will surprise people this year. In all the craziness of this offseason, I honestly don't see how our offense is going to be worse than it was last year. The o-line should benefit from renewed health and continuity, the QB who went .500 last year has more experience, the WRs are the best position group on the team, Eifert and James O should be reliable options at TE... and I personally believe that RB is not going to be a huge downgrade with no Lenny... he just doesn't fit the offense, and I like the potential of our young guys to fill his shoes. I'm not claiming we are gonna be a top 10 offense, but I do think that a lot of people are expecting a disaster on offense, and it won't be anything of the sort, barring key injuries.

The Bad:

- 6-10 seems like an optimistic prediction right now. Even with the offense being better than expected, this team as a whole is woefully short of top talent. And the talent that it does have is very young. Put all that together and it rarely, if ever, leads to success. I envision something similar to the 2015 season when Bortles threw 35 TDs, we had impressive young players at WR, and the team still went 5-11.
- The defense could be horrible. We lack talent at almost every position on this defense. Especially in the secondary. And where we do have talent, they are mostly first or second year players. I am confident in saying that we are going to struggle massively on defense this year.

The Ugly:

- Players seem to hate the idea of the Jaguars. I don't know what the hell has happened to this team in the last 3 years, but we are in a position where it seems like our own players want out, and other players across the league are looking down on us. It truly is embarassing to be so damn close to making a superbowl in 2017, to being the laughing stock of the league in 2020. This needs to change.
- There is no way that Doug and Dave still deserve to be shaping the future of this team. Now this is a bit of a tricky point for me, because, unlike most on here, I actually agree with almost all of the moves that have been made this offseason. I'm delighted they have put this team in a position where they are set up for the future, and I never believed we would be close to competing for a superbowl even if we had kept Calais, Yannick, Lenny, etc. But Caldwell and Marrone should have gone at the end of last year. All their talk about trying to change the culture is for nothing because, whether it was their fault or not (thanks Tom), they were still part of the former culture that has poisoned this team, and the results for both speak for themselves. They shouldn't be given the opportunity to fix something that they have to take some of the blame for creating.

Ultimately, I believe we will finish somewhere around 5 wins this season. I think several good players for the future to build around will emerge. I also think more problems with the Jags' "culture" will come to light. I think this will be enough for Doug and Dave to both be sent packing. A new coach and GM pairing will have a wonderful opportunity to shape this team to truly be competitive for a long time. I hope they make good decisions.

I post this for two reasons:

1. To give props to the OP for being right on the money. You da man.

2. To remind everyone that, while losing sucks, the reasons to be hopeful about the future of this team remain the same as they were before the season. Yes we suck now, and it hurts more because the [BLEEP] raised our expectations with the first game, but the future is still bright. There are a bunch of young players emerging, even if as a whole we are woefully lacking. Cap space and draft picks will go a long way to shore up the crappy parts of this roster. And Dave and Doug are gonna be gone.

Life is misery, but the future remains bright.
We should be happy about the current state of the Jags. In this year of turmoil and upheaval, we should take comfort that some things are steady and unchangeable

Lol

Who? Chark, Robinson and maybe Schenault and Jack.

Minshew looks like he is not the answer
Allen has been bad this year
Chaisson has done nothing outside of a sack where no one blocked him
Henderson had a first good game, decent vs Titans, bad vs Dolphins and barely played today.
