There's always hope.
Whenever one person speaks out of line, and goes after the good name of another person, it is fair to escalate and respond in kind.
But anybody can choose to be above it, and forgive.
You just need a critical mass of people to be ready to forgive and forget past political rhetoric. Those people have to be on both sides of the fence, and in the primary elections, they have to elect people who are also ready to reconcile.
