Jeep Urged to Change 'Offensive' Decades-Old Vehicle Name

The chief of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma is demanding that Jeep drop the name of the tribe from its popular Cherokee line of sports utility vehicles.

Totally understandable if the name were Cherokee [BLEEP].

Didn’t read the article.   Is this an attempt to have Jeep cut them a massive check?   I mean, they’re marketing and naming it something that tries to tell the buyer how awesome it is.  It’s not like they called it the “Jeep, not quite a wrangler/Sahara/rubicon, but it’ll get you to work and the grocery store and back, even inclement weather”

Remember this soda?  I just realized it was spelled Cherikee (as in Cherry)

They should. They are using their name. It's no different than a sports star wanting royalties on a product that uses their name and likeness. 

Unlike other minorities and groups that are catered to by society, Native Americans get none of those perks. They are basically forgotten by society. We shipped them off to areas in the United States we basically didn't want and there is little to no opportunities for them. Companies have been using their name and likenesses for a variety of products for a hundred years or better and up until recently, they've never complained. Other groups are constantly crying foul over being unfairly treated and they seemingly always get rewarded, but when it comes to Native Americans, they get ignored. Why is that? 

People talk about wanting reparations for blacks and that they are forced to live in poverty due to slavery, yet no mention of what we did to Native Americans. No talk of reparations for them. Go to a poor urban neighborhood and then go to a Native American Reservation and tell me who has it worse? Personally, I believe we have treated Native Americans like crap for too many years and that's because they rarely complain and when they do, they are shut down. For once, maybe people should start listening. If they were part of any other ostracized group, there would have already been a public outcry.

Remember the Chevy Colorado?
If the governor of colorado wrote a letter to GM saying, "the name of that truck belittles our state and offends us," that would be a pretty good indication that the name should change.
The Cherokee nation have an elected leadership that speaks for them in much the same way. Their word should be heeded.
Just because you think Chrysler meant it respectfully 50 years ago when they picked the name doesn't mean Cherokee today find it respectful.

If we're gonna cater to certain people (which we have, so that train has left the station), you have to cater to all people. Especially to a group of people like Native Americans who rarely ever complain and have been treated worse by the United States government than any other group of people in the history of this country.

There's no single "Apache" tribe and there never was. Most of their modern descendants don't use that name.
But if there was one elected guy who could speak for all Apache and he said the helicopter name belittled them, sure, how easy is it to change the name of a helicopter? It's simple. Just call it the 64 in the short term until Boeing comes up with something better.  Nothing to get anyone's panties in a wad over.

Perhaps we need to go after Native Americans for some of the names they choose. I mean who is representing the cattle industry when their namesake was taken by Chief Sitting Bull .

I've posted on here before about a Redditor who claimed he was an engineer for an unnamed car company. He explained that it is common practice for competing car manufacturers to purchase the newest model of each other's cars to tear down and examine for any advanced manufacturing or engineering insight. 

Hilariously, he stated that his company forgoes obtaining new Dodge/Chrysler cars because they're considered junk unworthy of examination. I don't know if he was genuine, but it sure does reinforce popular opinion about Chryslers.
