...on a
podcast appearance with Michael Irvin, Meyer said
he considered bringing Smith in and that he may still do it.
“I wanted him here,” Meyer said. “You know, we talked to him about joining here. He’s had a tough injury. Of all the players I’ve ever coached, and I would tell people this when people didn’t know how tough he was, he’s one of the toughest cats I’ve ever been around.
“[…] We had conversations with him. There are some medical people in our organization that were very concerned. And remember, our GM [Trent Baalke] actually drafted Alex at San Francisco. So you have two people in Jacksonville that love Alex. It was that was deeper than a player, now. He’s like our family. Both of us feel so strongly about them. But that’s something that we’re just going to keep an eye on because I hope he comes back.”
Seems like a good move. I like it. Probably could get him for cheap.
I would love him here for Trevor. And then move him into some sort of coaching role in the future
Don't understand why CJ Beathard was brought in. He's not very good.
I get the feeling Smith was looking for somewhere to start, and if he can’t get that we’ll end up signing him. CJ probably just a back up plan in case that doesn’t happen
I'm all for signing him to help mentor Lawrence.
I am all for coaches mentoring players and players playing. I don't understand the obsession with this stuff.

To a certain extent I agree with you, but I still think it could be helpful to bring a respected veteran into the locker room who knows Urban Meyer and has played for him and can vouch for him with the other players.

Then hire Smith as a coach and not a player. The 'mentoring player' is a myth.

camp arm.
I don't think he or Luton make it beyond the preseason on our roster.

this. the players don't need someone to vouch for the head coach.
The only way Smith ends up here as a QB is if we move Minshew. I like the idea of getting him involved in coaching. Urbz has already demonstrated a loyalty in that area with his 'guys'. Have him serve as a passing game consultant, spend time with the QB stable breaking down film and rehearsing plays/mechanics in practice, with the added bonus of not risking loss of limb.

And the plot thickens...
I say bring him in on a 1-day contract and let him retire a Jag. He would automatically be qualified as the 3rd or 4th best QB in Jaguar history.

Beathard isn't just a "camp arm". He signed for 2 years/5M with 2.5M guaranteed. That would be an awfully expensive body to just have in camp. It's honestly an expensive back-up QB when you consider that Minshew is on the roster still on his rookie contract, has more starting experience than Beathard and beats him in every statistical category - more TDs per game, yds per game, higher completion % and fewer interceptions per game - not to mention a better winning percentage.

It's obvious that the Jags brought in Beathard so they could trade Minshew. The trade hopefully happens during the draft but we might have to wait until preseason.
I think it’s a good chance you see Smith sit out a year and take some time with his family and then if all is going well for Urban then you will see Smith here next season as a Assistant QB coach or similar.
As for the other conversations on this post. I think players that mentor other players is not a myth. It happens all the time as it does in every job/sport in the world. Also, a mentor doesn’t have to outright say “I am a mentor” it might be that they are a role model to other players, which is just another way of being a mentor.
On Minshew, I just have this weird feeling we will trade him with Washington to move up in Round 1 to get a OT.

That would be fantabulous. Grab Darrisaw and move Minshew. Win-win.
