The Truth is painful for those who cannot accept it.

He said, she said so it must be true.  Whatever.

Let it at least play out before social media deems a person guilty.  Its hard sometimes to even say anything these days thst doesnt offend someone.  That is the pathetic thing.

It really isn't that hard to not be an [BLEEP].  You can't say racist or hateful things.  Urban Meyer should have known the hire would have backlash.  He probably just figured he'd get by with stuff like that like he did everywhere else he's been, but the NFL is just a tad more high profile.

He hired him because he thought he was the best man for the job based on results. I am sure he heard about the issues in his past but figured he could just let it ride under the radar and eventually die down. But it is the NFL and that isn't going to happen.

Urban Meyer should have a conservation with Darrell Bevell, if he hasn't already.

Hey, just the person we need. What were your impressions of Coombs?

The Lions Special Teams were by far the team's best unit in the 2020 season.

P Jack Fox went from a former Practice Squad player, who never played in an NFL regular season game, to being selected to the Pro Bowl. In the same Conference as LA Rams P Johnny Hekker.

The Kickoff and Punt Coverage Teams were amongst the best in the NFL.

Jamal Agnew was impactful on Returns to the extent that the Jaguars gave him a contract the Lions couldn't compete with.

Yet, despite all of this, the rogue decision by Brayden Coombs to call a Fake Punt at Tennessee, which cost Coombs his job, is clearly the reason he didn't get another NFL Special Teams Coordinator job this winter.  Even with the family OSU connection factor, I am shocked that Urban Meyer is considering hiring Coombs with Bevell on the staff as OC.

Call it what you want, the History of Urban is replete with these kinds of incidents. You choose to brush it off, I remember Zack Smith and Chris Doyle and see a pattern.

Hey, he's getting better, he's not bringing in murderers anymore.

eventually die down? The dude is still in the middle of resolving the suit filed against him. That's the exact reason why D. Watson is presently untouchable, no matter how affordably the tinhorns want to dump him.

Simple moral: Urbz extends benefit of the doubt to friends. Urbz' critics are not nearly as generous.

There's a big difference between giving him a job and giving him a position of leadership.

Conservation... hehe.  Could be a bit awkward.  You think the guy really got fired for one rogue play?  Seems a bit hasty to drop a supposed up and comer for that unless Coombs told Bevell to f off because he's gonna do what he wants or something.

Thanks as always D6, always appreciate your takes. It could be interesting to see if this is an issue and Meyer going to just keep them apart and that he can smooth any issues that may come up.
Look, his dad is a F/U (Friend of Urban), so it's all cool. Really.

If I recall correctly, there was speculation at the time Darrell Bevell fired Brayden Coombs that it wasn't an isolated incident with Coombs. Even if that was the case, if not for the rogue Fake Punt Call or anything close to that, I doubt Coombs would have been fired during the season.

My pleasure, JagFan81.

As much positive that Brayden Coombs could potentially provide the Jaguars, the risk / reward of Urban Meyer hiring him as Special Teams Coordinator doesn't seem favorable. Darrell Bevell is a professional.  But it would be putting him in a situation that I doubt he envisioned when accepting Meyer's offer to become the Jaguars OC.

For all we know, Bevell may have recommended Coombs.

Schneider: "Sorry, mate, I'm outta here."

UM: "Damn.  [BLEEP] do I do about this?  Time to consider options."

Bevell: "Urban, I had a big disagreement and fired him but he's a hell of a ST coach.  You should get Coombs."

UM: "You sure?  You guys had quite the falling out."

Bevell: "Yeah, it will work out.  We're adults."

Unlike much of the posting on this forum (not yours but the Tebow threads are full of imaturity), that's an adult conversation.  And a far more likely scenario than UM going rogue and telling Bevell, who runs half the team including the franchise, to get stuffed.  I know people here like the juicy gossip but that's actually not how big boy decisions are made. Schneider

You actually think UM would talk with his own coordinators about whether or not they could get along with the new coordinator?  Almost sounds too sensible to be realistic.

That first conversation after hiring Coombs between Bevell and Coombs could be fun...
Bevell: "Congrats, Brayden.  Welcome to the team."
Coombs: "Thanks Darrell.  Glad to be here.  And don't even think about firing me this time...  You can't"
Bevell: "Nope, you're Urb's problem now."

Laughs all around...  Yay team!

That's how I see it going. I don't see Bevell being upset about it because Coombs wouldn't be answering to him. In fact, if he is good as the numbers say he is, he would most likely welcome the hiring of Coombs.
Yeah, I LOVE it when someone I've fired ends up in the department next door. That always works out great!

Yeah, there's definitely that aspect.  Everybody gets fired in the coaching industry though, often more than once.

Yes they do, but the relationship of terminator and terminated is usually pretty strained after that.

I'm confident that Darrell Bevell will do what's best for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

I can envision Bevell mentioning to Urban Meyer the many positives Brayden Coombs brought to the Lions. In the same conversation, mentioning everything that led up to his decision to fire Coombs. Then with the information from Bevell and others Meyer talks to about Coombs, Meyer makes the decision he believes is in the Jaguars best interest.
