I don't like this, either.

Jones is miles better as a corner and we signed Agnew specifically for special teams

Sadly, I'm thinking so.  I'm guessing they want him for backup returner and didn't want to keep 6 cornerbacks.

It's a bad move.  Pass defense is so much more important than backup returner.

FWIW, I'm also guessing this means Pharoh Cooper is not making the team.

I thought the general consensus was that Jones was a positive in the secondary, with the one concern was his inability to stay healthy.

I don't like this trade.

Yes, we wound up getting a 6th round pick for a guy we got off waivers.

But his contribution is likely to far outweigh any 6th round pick we draft.

Furthermore, by my count, we now have 4 6th round picks next year:  Our own, the Schobert trade, the Minshew trade, and now Jones.  Either they have scouted ahead and feel that next year's draft class has a lot of depth, or they are already stockpiling picks to move up.
I think Jones was better than Herndon and Claybrooks, and Campbell, for that matter.  He was young enough and cheap enough to make keeping him worthwhile.

Maybe they are clearing up another roster spot for waiver wire pickups.

All told, I would have rather kept Jones.

You must have missed the week one and two game day thread because people were saying he was garbage. Mind you I don't like the move because he was a solid player.

When you look at it truthfully your top three corners are Griffen, Henderson and Campbell then who Herndon if Jones ain't starting what is the loss. Your not touching the top three because of draft capital and money invested

Right now, Jones is better than Campbell, and is certainly better than just about any 6th rounder we could hope to draft.

A little disappointment is expected.

Granted, this team is very early into a longer term rebuild, so it makes some sense to accumulate draft picks.

Nevertheless, I don't see the gain in trading Jones.

This would be horrible...jettisoning Jones and Cooper for Claybrooks.
I think they're stockpiling late round picks to try and move up a few slots in the early round so that they can address needs with the best quality player/value. the more ammo you have the better you can maneuver so need and value mesh.

Still liked Jones, not sure how much depth we have at Corner now but they must have thought Herndon & Claybrooks won the 4th & 5th spots decisively and figured they can squeeze another pick out of a guy they got off waivers.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they decided to keep Claybrooks over Jones (if this does end up happening) because Claybrooks is faster.

And I wish I was kidding
i think they belive cample can replace jones and this frees up some money for the players we will sign off the waiver wire like maybe a good TE or OL. i dont think its a good idea as jones was our 3rd best CB.
We are going to own the 6th round of next years draft.
All I saw during the 3 preseason games was Sydney Jones getting torched ... Time after time.  If he was scheduled to get cut tomorrow, getting something for him is a great move.  What I saw wasn't worth keeping, especially have the 1st waiver claim on every player waived.
What never gets factored into the equation is, perhaps HE wanted out? He may view himself as Starter material and would bring disturbance to the locker room?

If this is the case, it's smart to get such players outta there. Just as Minshew. He thinks he's Starter material and was leaning on Lawrence. Some players can't function with a nemesis on their own team.

Sidney Jones had an extremely modest salary and the Jaguars have plenty of salary cap room.

Tre Herndon has been burnt like toast over the period he's been here and Campbell has yet to play 1 regular season game in the NFL and has been terrible in the preseason. You obviously don't watch much Jaguars' football.

Did you watch the last 3 years where Tre Herndon was getting torched all the time or this preseason, where Tyson Campbell was giving up long touchdowns, because he can't track the ball in the air?
Jones has been French roasted all preseason yet you guys are still crying?
Neither Campbell nor Jones is good. Unfortunately, we are stuck with Campbell for at least a year. Maybe someone can teach him how to follow the ball.

Yes, some of the more miserable posters don't seem to understand that Campbell is a lock since he was drafted in the 2nd round this year. Griffin, Henderson and Campbell are our top 3 CB because of salary and/or draft position. Maybe it's the wrong decision to trade Jones instead of cutting another safety but by now we all know the team adds safeties since they are in dime a lot. If the team doesn't see him as the best nickel he's easy to trade.

He seemed to be having a hard time in the new system. I probably would've kept him though.

I have been watching since 2002 when we beat the 12-4 Donovan McNabb Eagles when I was just a child. That was the first game I ever watched. You know the same franchise that cut Sidney Jones three years into his rookie contract after spending a premium 2nd round pick on him when they had a need a corner. Sidney Jones, who got burned all preseason and just got traded away for a 6th round pick. You’re dying on the hill for a player that has been cut and traded for a late round pick at just 25. You’re making me talk sideways about a player I like but there’s a reason Herndon is on this roster and Jones is not. Also, that’s just my opinion anyway, and Sidney Jones doesn’t validate how much football I do or don’t watch. Grow up.

Quoting yourself?
I think this is just proof we will be playing a lot of safeties in nickel in the new scheme, so they decided they didn’t need as many corners, sounds like Jones was just odd man out, whether we agree or not they clearly thought he was 5/6th rated cb so to them trading your 5/6th corner for a pick is just part of the business. Footballs a game of opinions and they see these guys every day so there opinions are more educated than ours, doesn’t mean they’re always gonna be right, but it’s just business

I liked Sydney Jones.  I thought he was a good CB.  I guess Seattle thought so, too.

The only reason I can think of as to why he might have been considered expendable is if there was someone else at about the same place on the depth chart who was better on special teams.  Backup players have to be good on special teams.

It's also possible that they could package one or more of these 6th round picks they've acquired and trade for a player at a position of more need.  TE?
