I was in high school when it happened. A guy who I thought of as a class clown and a bully was running to each classroom to tell them to turn the news on. Our teacher didn't have to be told twice and turned the news on right away but my initial reaction was this must be some kind of a joke. When I saw it wasn't a joke, I wondered how it could happen. I thought no metal objects were allowed on planes so I figured they had taken over the aircraft with plastic bottles of poison gas. I figured they put on gas masks and cracked the bottles open. I had no idea how respirators actually work, I was 17. Then I wondered who could have done it. I didn't know there were Muslims pissed off at us. I knew they were pissed off at Israel but not us. I remembered hearing about anarchists tearing up a bunch of buildings at the WTO Seattle meetings and I thought there was a connection between the WTO and the WTC, so I figured it was those guys.
By the time the school day was over I learned the real story about Islamic terrorists and box cutters. But I swear to you that was so left field from my prior knowledge of how the world worked that it was like a second shock.
Ten years later in 2011 I wrote something to this effect on Facebook: "Why do we say never forget? I will never forget 9/11 but if I could, I might. Why force yourself to relive such an unpleasant day?" A girl that had gone on a couple of dates with on of my groomsmen in 2006 then vanished from our lives replied, "your opinion is worthless and so are you." Wowee! Unfriended! To this day one of the rudest interactions I've ever had on the 'book. I think she misunderstood me? But that's social media for you.

You don’t forget because a few cowards destroyed two iconic towers, attempted to destroy the pentagon, and another flight that was destined for more destruction took thousands of innocent lives. All for us being American. If you remember, there were people jumping from WTC center in hopes that if they made the landing they would survive. Imagine to yourself being in the position in which jumping hundreds of feet to your most likely death is your best option. Imagine doing that in a country in which that [BLEEP] shouldn’t have even happened. The innocent lives, the first responders and passengers on those planes are the reason we don’t forget. We also don’t forget because we’re supposed to be United. Despite what your political views teach you.

You're missing my point. I can't forget. No one can. Why say "never forget"? It implies something beyond the events of the day which are unforgettable. It implies that the speaker wants to force agreement and unity where none exists.

Because if things start going really bad here in the USA, and it really hits the fan, I want those feelings to motivate me to take action, armed or unarmed, doesn't matter. I have a great deal of pride in my country and I always have. This is the greatest nation on the face of the planet. A beacon of hope for others and I will defend it until my last breath.

Dude, just don't. If that's what
you think that's your right to do so but no one else here does so leave it alone.

You always tell me to stop posting, but never explain why. You're not a mod. It's kind of immature.

She thinks you’re a complete tool, is an explanation really needed?

I strongly disagreed with what you were implying and I said don't go there. As in, no one else agrees with you so leave it alone. Move along.

I'm not sure which is worse, telling someone to stop posting, or purporting to speak for others. Neither is very mature.

To be quite honest, I quit caring about whatever your points may or could be. You seem to question the Never Forget. Do you question the other phrases, mottos, slogans and rallies of the complete and utter BS that should be discussed in another forum? No, you seem on board with all those, unless it means making or keeping our nation what it is or was. I’m done here. I’m not gonna get sucker banned for something as simple as, well, you. You’re fired.

I think it’s pretty evident that no one in this thread agrees with you, which was her point.

Can you close the comments to this before [BLEEP] gets out of hand? Thanks.

Why do you think you control the right to freedom of speech? Because somebody doesn't agree with you and/or you don't want to hear it because it doesn't fit your opinion?
He's entitled to his opinion just as much as you are, or anybody else on this website/world. Just because you're buddies with bunnies or whoever else, because you guys share the same dumb opinions on some things, doesn't mean Mike isn't entitled to his own opinions as well.

Because one day this will probably be condensed down into "some people did some things to a few buildings."
I didn't want this post to go sideways and off track as subjects so often do around here. That's why I asked for it to be closed. But that's not for me to say. I'll just stay out of it.

The only way that would happen is if we fail to teach our kids about it, or if other, more terrible events happen that make 9/11 seem irrelevant.
Does either seem likely to you?

I have no idea. That depends who is in charge of the agenda used in schools. I wouldn't say it's impossible either of those things happen.

Nothing's impossible, but they both seem extremely unlikely today. As children we were taught to ask our parents where they were when they heard JFK had been shot. Our kids will be taught to ask us similar questions about 9/11. It won't be forgotten for at least 100 years, if not 200.
