The Soviets did this all the time. It’s all part of the game.

I've seen AGIs cut off carriers and shadow carriers groups but I ve never seen a helo be allowed to get anywhere near that close to a ship.
Big mistake allowing them get that close. I cannot understand why they allowed that helo to get anywhere near that ship.
From what I been told, the Phalanx was locked on and a warning given to the pilot and that was enough.

Oh yeah. Soviet helicopters hovered next to and took pictures of our ships. In international waters all sea going vessels are susceptible to aircraft flyby. There’s no rule against it. However, the rules change if they fly over the ship, then that is seen as overt provocation and potential attack. It’s all a game of brinksmanship.
We were being shadowed by a Russian surveillance ship in the Sea of Japan which caused all of the hangar bay doors to be closed. Really odd in open calm seas. I was standing on the fantail looking through binoculars looking at Russians looking at me through binoculars. They centered up in our wake and closed distance to about 500 yards. The CIWS mount I was standing next to came to life and slewed on the ship like something out of Robocop, which is exactly what they intended to instigate. They immediately peeled off and pulled back.

Yeah, I've seen all that also. I guess my point is, I've never seen anything that close to the boat. Maybe it is the video perspective that makes it appear closer than it really is.

They definitely test the limits of restraint.

That’s a given. No one doubts it.
Encounters with the "enemy" are common. I had the opportunity to see a Russian Bear aircraft fly by our ship when we were in the north Atlantic back in the early 90's (escorted by two US F-14's). The Russian aircraft didn't fly over the ship, but was close enough for us to see it.
With that being said, the non-response from this current administration regime is telling when it's a clearly hostile country testing our will. Having an aircraft of any type from a hostile country approaching a ship like that and that close should never be allowed. Of course our new "woke" kinder and gentler military allows it.
