Jimmy was a really good player for us. I have a lot of good memories and enjoyed watching him play the game.
Hall of Fame enshrines exceptional figures in the sport of professional football, including players, coaches, franchise owners, and front-office personnel, almost all of whom made their primary contributions to the game in the National Football League. It is not just stats.
Bo is being inducted this year. He was exceptional when he played, there have not been many tackles like him. The shortness of his career was the only negative. I have to believe that Tony's recent broadcasting career has helped him.
Is Jimmy exceptional ? Not good, not great, exceptional. It is not what we think, it is how the process and people running it think. He could get in but it is a long shot as this string has named more than a few receivers that have similar career stats.
there's quite a few in the hall that would cause me to contest this assertion.
That's probably a discussion for another thread, though.
Jimmy has an uphill battle to be considered.
If the 2 or 3 receivers ahead of him in line ever get in - this is a worthy discussion.

I don't think there is a chance for Jimmy to get in. I think this era of Hall of Fame WR will require playoff highlights or just insurmountable regular season awards. All the other WR will just get lumped into the 'well it is just a pass happy era' and have their accomplishments undermined. If Jimmy played maybe 10 years later, he would have a chance because more of his highlights would have hit social media and caught the hearts of national football fans.
Even Fred has little chance, because he just has few memorial national highlights. If he was still close to his prime on those New England teams and maybe won a SB, I think he may sneak in.
Overall the NFL HoF is a bit crazy with how few people are let in every season. It made sense in say the 80s/early 90's, but there are just too many memorable players and too many positions that get overlooked when they are limited to basically 5 guys every season. Plus now coaches are getting shafted with it going to only 1 coach or other important NFL contributor. You could easily have say 8 players and 3 coaches/contributors every year and still maintain the high standards of the club. No matter what, it is never going to be like the Basketball HoF where guys like Tracy McGrady get in.
“The only criteria for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame are a nominee’s achievements and contributions as a player, coach, or contributor in professional football in the United States of America.”
That's the Hall's official stance, but worthiness of those stats is based on opinionated analysis of sportswriters, so who knows what could influence the voters.

Well, a couple of things. When I say "stats", I mean his on-field performance vs what was going on off the field.
Also, Jimmy was much more than a really good player. He was an exceptional and elite NFL receiver during his career. There was a four or five year span where a case could be made that he was one of the most dynamic receivers in football. If his playing time hadn't been abbreviated on the front end (due to his medical and injury issues) and the backend (due to his drug issue), he might be in the top 10 players at his position of all time.
I dunno if he'll really get in, he faces an uphill battle because of the market he played in, his off the field issues and the fact that stats for receivers are getting more and more inflated as time goes by. I suspect he will though eventually and likely Fred Taylor too although they'll both face obstacles.

Rod Smith and Jimmy Smith pretty much have the same exact stats but Rod Smith has 2 SB Rings and no suspensions so Rod goes in before Jimmy. If you don't think Rod Smith should be in the HOF, then one should not think Jimmy should be in either. Perhaps they should both be in but Rod goes in before Jimmy but neither are likely to get in.
Jimmy has two SB rings from being on the Cowboys his rookie/second season but Rod Smith is a good comp to Jimmy numbers wise.
Rod averaged 83/1100/6.5TDs a season over a decade
Jimmy averaged 78/1117/6
Almost mirrored each other from 97-05.

problem is that every year in the future will add 2 or 3 receivers that will either have as good or better of cases or at least the bias of recency to rely upon.

Yep.
Conversely - I think the number of RBs putting up ungodly numbers will continue to wane as the league evolves further into a pass heavy focus, eventually helping Fred's chances.
