Killer drivers could be given life sentences under new laws set to come into force this week while new offence will allow courts to dole out harsher punishments to those who cause lasting injuries
  • Careless drivers who kill while under the influence could also face life sentences
  • Sports coaches and faith leaders will be recognised in law as having ‘positions of trust’, which will ban them from engaging in sexual activity with under-18s

Ted Kennedy disagrees.

Joking aside, many countries such as Turkey have a zero tolerance level on issues such as this and it works. The US misses the mark with regard to many laws being too lax.
They're going to pass a law that coaches and "faith leaders" cannot have sex with kids under 18?

Was this not already illegal? Does this mean it's okay for everyone else as long as they're not coaches or faith leaders?

I imagine it's like hate crimes in the US. Just a different standard applied to a situation. But, then again, I didn't read the article. I'm all for harsher penalties on those who abuse children.

Age of consent is 16 over here, but they’re raising it for people in a position of power over those that could be considered vulnerable (or students with teachers) that part is already illegal but they’re talking about raising it to include anyone even if they don’t report to said adult, as the argument is if they were to have sex with one 17 year old, why wouldn’t they another whom they potentially have power over?
