Boldly going into space! Star Trek legend Nichelle Nichols who died last month is set to have her ashes blasted into deep space as part of a special 'Enterprise mission' 
  • Ashes and DNA from the iconic actress - who passed away aged 89 of natural causes last month - will be flown into space
  • Nichelle's - who played Lieutenant Uhura - 'symbolic samples' are scheduled to fly 'beyond the moon' as it will 'reach the final frontier as early as this year'
  • She will not be alone on the mission as ashes and DNA from other departed Star Trek pioneers will join her including James Doohan (Scotty), Majel Barrett Roddenberry (Nurse Chapel), the TV series creator Gene Roddenberry, and visual-effects wiz Douglas Trumbull 
  • Her son Kyle Johnson is fully behind the project as he said: 'I’m sure she would have much preferred to go on the shuttle but this is a pretty close second' 
  • A gram of Nichelle's ashes plus DNA samples taken from her and her son were put into a capsule and will be flown into space 
  • Nichols passed away from natural causes on July 30 at the age of 89, as her son confirmed the news the next day
  • Star Trek co-star William Shatner hailed his late costar Nichelle Nichols as a 'beautiful woman' whose iconic character Lieutenant Uhura helped 'refine social issues' across the globe
