Federal Court rules Big Tech has no 'freewheeling First Amendment right to censor'

Decision upholds Texas law that limited the right of social media companies to squash opinions

A federal appeals court upheld a Texas law on Friday that seeks to curb censorship by social media platforms. The ruling, a major victory for Republicans who charge companies like Twitter and Facebook are limiting free speech, is a step in a major legal battle that could end up at the Supreme Court.

We shouldn't be asking you or I or they have a right or not. We all have any number of rights. But rights come with responsibilities and reasonable regulations. Facebook certainly has a right to operate their website as they choose, but the government has some limited power to regulate that. The court didn't find that "Facebook has no right" to delete or restrict or censor content. Rather, the judge found that Texas' regulation was reasonable as written. That finding could change depending on how things are enforced.
