I get that they don't want players betting on the games, but dude wasn't even with the team and the bet he placed was like 12 weeks after he left due to his mental. Wasn't around the team for months and had zero impact on the game in any way.
This duplicity reminds me of the NFL policy on not allowing a person to bring alcohol into the stadium but happily selling NFL licensed plastic Jaguars flasks.
Jeff Prosser brought up a good point this morning on the radio about the irony of Ridley being suspended while the NFL “joins hands and skips down the street with organized gambling”.

He didn't get suspended for "Gambling" he got suspended for betting on NFL games, including on the team he plays for. I'm glad he's gonna be a jaguar because he is a good player, but I understand why they were harsh on it because it's an intergrity issue for the game.

How do you play for a team when you haven't even stepped foot in their building for at least 4 months?

Had he been an active player on the Falcons at the time of the bet he placed, and even remotely looked like he was throwing the game i'd bet money (no pun intended) that he would have never played in the NFL again.
I could see an argument for the suspension on the grounds that as because he was still a member of the team, though on medical leave, he has higher opportunity for advance knowledge about the team. In essence, sort of an "insider trading" version of betting. And additionally if people saw he was betting on the game, they could read something into that which could possibly affect the line, etc.
I doubt he has that much SM or public presence to make any such effect, and there are probably dozens of people who had as much "'insider info" as him who could or may also bet and get away with it. But from an institutional standpoint, the NFL would have to come down hard on that stance once it game to light.

If he bet on them to lose, I could see that, but he didn't.

He was an employee, doesn't matter if he was playing or not.
Insider knowledge does exist but the NFL has to try and keep the appearance of it out of the league.
Look at what's happening in MMA. A trainer/coach had a betting show and was betting on fights. I don't think he was having fighters throw fights or determine outcomes. The issue was injures were kept from everyone but people inside his camp knew, and the info started to leak. Even the casinos didn't know and bets on the opponent for 1st round TKO started coming in hours before the fight.
He wasn't hurting the fight but the appearance of it being fixed hurts the league. There are already more and more talk about the NFL being fixed each year.

What about the other 4 games then? IIRC the bet was a 5 team parlay. Him picking the Falcons over the Jags just happened to be one of the 5. Did he have insider knowledge on the other 4 teams he picked as well? I could understand it if he was only betting on Falcons games every week, but that wasn't the case.
Who cares.. He paid his debt.
I can’t wait to see him in that jags uniform.
Ridley gonna win come back player of the year

The is zero chance that a guy suspended for gambling wins that award the following year. He could have the best season in history and won't win that award.

What’s wrong with that? The NFL does just that in the playoffs every season with phantom calls against the non-favored storyline teams.
So what I’m hoping is that the time away was actually good for him. He was having some major issues on the Falcons, unless we forget. I think he needed some time to clear his head space. Now he’s going to be hungry to win another contract, because the time to strike in life is now. We know he has the talent. Overall, I think having the year off may actually benefit him and us in the long term.

This is what I never understood. Same with Pete Rose. If you're betting on your own team to win, where's the harm? Essentially you're betting on your team to win every Sunday you step on the field and get a paycheck.
I understand the "slippery slope, could evolve into more" argument. But just betting on your own team to WIN is a non-issue for me. Players can play fantasy football though which I think lends itself much more to affecting games than just win or lose. Just so much irony and double standards round the whole thing.

Falcons fans were saying it wasn't mental health issues. They said he was upset because the Falons were blasting him on social media about some drops he had. We were 2nd in drops last year and not once did the Jags blast one of our players on a post about drops

Pete Rose is a little bit of a different situation. As the manager, he had a lot more control over the game. The argument was that he was essentially betting against his team on days where he didn't place a bet. For example, let's say he has a big bet on Friday's game but none on Thursday. Rose may be reluctant to use his best closer on Thursday because he wants him fresh for the Friday game to win his bet. They then maybe lose on Thursday when they otherwise wouldn't. It may be little things but sports leagues are afraid of even giving the tiniest impression that the team isn't 100% trying to win. Otherwise, fans will quit watching. It's also a case where there is zero need for a player/coach to place a bet, so they see no harm in having tough penalties.
Calvin, Calvin your the man.
