Tough decision for me, but I would lean towards letting him walk. Our cap situation just doesn't look the best for next year.

With Darious Williams being moved to the outside, the defense in general seems to look better overall. Hopefully by next year Travon Walker has learned some new moves and becomes a straight terror. Our lack of pass rush we have seen throughout the season may not be as much of an issue. I think finding a replacement for Smoot in the draft is probably the best idea.

Can't help but imagine how good this D-line would look if Campbell was back in Jacksonville.... he would of kept Allen on track and helped Walker develop.

I am in complete agreement.
Like others have said it's a tough call. He's not managed to move to a starter but is solid depth and we don't have too many big bodies that can get to the QB.

If I remember right he's getting around $6m this season so he's getting paid pretty well but think a lot depends on his recovery.
It really sucks for Smoot.
He’s young enough that he could sign a 1 year prove it deal like engram did. I would sign him for 1 year but wouldn’t break the bank.
That’s a tough question. He will go to the highest bidder. But I would make a solid offer and see what happens.
What are your tiop three offseason priorities? Where does the SSmoot decision fit in relation to those top 3 priorities?

1. Resign Engram and Key

2. Add an interior O-lineman

3. Add a slot corner

4. Add a bigger bodied reciever

Or a TE with good hands.

I agree with the first 3, but instead of "big bodied receiver," I would say DT.

In general, we need more beef on the offensive and defensive lines.  And a slot CB.

Here's 4

OL
NB
TE (sign Engram + draft pick mid round)
IDL pass rusher

While Smoot fits the bill on the 4th item - he's coming off injury -  and we really need a more consistent pocket disruptor than what Smoot has shown in most contests - they are hard to find, but it is a need nonetheless.

It's a heavily rotated position and Smoot is the guy you rotate in - not the guy you start.

Aligned with you on this. Plenty of great value all across this draft to hit these needs as well as free agency.

waaaaaaaaaaay down the list.

top 3 will be:

figure out Josh Allen's future
darft, free up cap to ensure we can make picks
Get Ridley off suspension and on the practice field
This is easy when emotions are removed which you have to do in these situations. I love Smoot.

Move on to younger, cheaper, healthier. The NFL is a brutal business from a human standpoint sometimes but that’s life. Plus, the NFL already made him wealthy.

I feel the same way. Smoot has earned about $10 million during his NFL career. No doubt he has been much more productive than a lot of players paid considerably more. However, I can't feel too sorry for a guy who has averaged making $1.5 million/year playing football. My guess is that he is not one of those guys who spends their money unwisely, so he and his family are in very good financial shape regardless of how he recovers from this injury.

All NFL players should realize that it is a business, as you say. There is very little loyalty from General Managers and owners when it comes to re-signing players who severely hurt their salary cap or who are coming off an injury. One of the best examples was when the Jaguars decided to part ways with Tony Boselli, their 1st ever draft choice and eventual Hall of Famer.

The Jaguars are likely to prioritize paying Evan Engram during the off-season. I seriously doubt Arden Key will be returning due to the combination of his recent play and the Jaguars cap difficulties. Key seems to love playing here and has become one of the team leaders, but nobody can fault him for taking several million dollars more from another team in free agency. Good pass rushers under 30 are always in demand.

Finding pass rushers to replace Key and most likely Smoot will need to be the team's top priority, along with offensive linemen, during the off-season.
Smoot wont be able to sign until October anyway. By then he'll be a stop gap for some injury depleted team, maybe us.

He could catch on anywhere. San Francisco comes to mind. Minnesota as well.
