Domestic extremism bill would criminalize free speech, create 'Ministry of Truth,' advocacy group warns

Washington attorney general concerned by anti-government ideologies, 'extreme white supremacism'

A bill pushed by Washington's attorney general would criminalize free speech and lead to an Orwellian "Ministry of Truth" under the guise of preventing domestic terrorism, according to a regional think tank.

"This bill will create a two-tiered justice system where some people have free speech and others don't, and that is a dangerous path for us to be set upon," Liv Finne, director for education at the Washington Policy Center, told Fox News.

That's funny, the article you linked says it would NOT criminalize free speech.

"While SHB 1333 itself would not criminalize any speech or association..."

Yet...
Jeez, Marty.
The bill is just authorizing the state attorney to form a commission and write a report making further recommendations.
It's nothing.
That said, I don't need experts and a state funded report to know there is very little a government can do to fight disinformation without also hurting free speech. An effective policy against disinformation will be abused sooner than later.
At least Mikey can see the writing on the wall for once. This is no different than requiring that paid bloggers register with the state. It's "justifiable" in a sense but will eventually be abused. The only difference is how it's reported by the mainstream. You guys really need to stop being manipulated by charged language.

I nominate Pontius Pilate to head up this Ministry of Truth.
I mean, the Patriot Act was once viewed as a good thing. What could possibly go wrong with this?  Ninja

I'm not saying it's a good thing; I'm just pointing out the article says the exact opposite of what he posted.

He said, "Domestic extremism bill would criminalize free speech..."

While the article said, ""While SHB 1333 itself would not criminalize any speech or association..."

I'm not in favor of that bill passing.  It's ridiculous to think that any government should police people's thoughts or statements.
