The NFL has dropped the hammer on five different players for violating the league's gambling policy
The
NFL has made it very clear that gambling on games won't be tolerated and five different players found that out the hard way on Friday. The NFL has announced that Stanley Berryhill III,
Jameson Williams,
Quintez Cephus,
C.J. Moore and

2 of them just did it in the locker room, not that big a deal IMO. The 3 that bet on the NFL got what they should.
It's not difficult to grasp. Stay away from drugs, stay away from gambling, stay away from scandal while drawing an NFL paycheck.

You left out the part where the NFL is preaching, "Hey everybody please come bet with us and our Partners/Sponsors, DraftKings and FanDuel."

I've commented before about the duality of the NFL and legal gambling, but rules are rules for the players with no ambiguity.

And hire a personal driver.

And pay him to bring you a high end escort so you pay by the day instead of the lifetime.

I just don't see how betting on College Football should carry a punishment in the NFL. It has zero impact on the NFL, but as we all know, the NFL is a joke when it comes to their make shift "rules". The reasoning why is because it happened "inside the facility" is a complete joke as well.
Hell, I'd put down money that Goodell is betting on NFL games, as well as other leagues/sports, just under a different name and/or somebody else placing the bets for him.
I still can’t believe how gambling is a thing now. I’ve seen friends blow through their pay checks. It’s so easy to put oneself in financial trouble like this.
The gambling issue is starting to fray my enjoyment of the league.

The two who did it in the locker room gambled on college games and is the only reason they didn't get the harsher penalty the other three players received.

Fantasy did that for me, gambling only made it worse.
Like it's even hitting things like Nascar. I don't need quinellas or odds to win, I want to watch guys trading paint or making great catches or running well-designed plays.

+1000, and I don't do either. It's always in the back of my mind now as to whether or not the 'fix' is in. Vegas doesn't like to lose. Just ask Charlie Babbitt.
It doesn't bother me yet, but I could see how it could start making me untrustworthy of "the fix" eventually.
Personally - I like placing a few small wagers on weekly fantasy squads at fan duel. Keeps me interested in non AFCS games a bit more.

I agree with both of you. The players and other employees are responsible for their actions. Yet, the hypocrisy of the NFL should be a central theme of the story.

It's not about betting on another sport or league, the NFL doesn't care about that. It's when these players lose and lose big because they have no self control (proven when they do it in the locker room). Once you owe money you open the door to allow it to affect your league, team, and play. Instead of having to monitor every player that loses and making sure they aren't leaking info or affecting games, they make it easier by just saying no betting allowed.
