Will he be ready to take a decent rotational number of snaps by week 6 or so?
Will he be somewhere near the same level of effectiveness?

These unanswered questions are why the guarantee is low, and I'm fairly optimistic we'll get a Smoot who is 80-90% of his former self. It won't change the face of our defense - but it will help. For that price tag, it's worth taking the chance.
Bringing back guys who buy in and work out also just helps the continuation of the culture change Pederson orchestrated so brilliantly.

Yea, they rolled the dice on him, but who better?  The devil you know is much better than the devil you don't

I have to agree. Smoot was ranked 2nd on the team in sacks last season. Over the last 4 seasons, Smoot has brought 22.5 sacks to the table.

I’ll take that all day for $6.25M per.

Only 8 players in the history of the franchise has more career sacks than Dawuane Smoot. By the way he only has 17 starts in his career.

Here are the franchise all time sack leaders:

Brackens - 55
Ngakoue - 37.5
Smeenge - 34
Campbell - 31.5
Henderson - 29
K. Hardy  -  28.5
P.  Spicer  - 28.5
J.  Allen  -  26.5 (if he gets 11 sacks… 2nd)
D.  Smoot - 22.5
G. Walker - 22.5

As a DT, only John Henderson has more sacks in team history. Smoot ranks 2nd all time in sacks behind John Henderson for Defensive Tackles. Dawuane Smoot and Gary Walker both have 22.5 sacks. As a DT Marcus Stroud ranks 4th all time.

to bolded:
Many of Smoot's sacks have technically come from the OLB and 4-3 DE positions. Not DT or 3-4 end.

I would have said no chance last year but he sure looks like he will be ready to go. He has to be medically cleared to sign so I'm guessing he will be full go soon.

We may also get an improved Smoot as he had to work hard all winter when normally players take some downtime.

Longer timetable given he has signed the contract but I guess they are fine knowing he won't be ready.

I guess he starts on the PUP list? Is he cleared for practice yet?

He will provide veteran leadership during the playoffs.
Smoot is that veteran DE we’ve been begging for. 22.5 sacks since 2017. He will also be able to line head up over the guard if needed inside that defensive line.
Great veteran presence for our young pass rush corps we signed in draft

I wish Smoot was our starting DT.
