Maryland Court says parents can't opt kids out of LGBTQ+ curriculum: 'Not a fundamental right'

Parents argued the inclusion of LGBTQ+ books indoctrinated their kids

A federal court in Maryland decided Thursday that parents can't opt their kids out of reading books with LGBTQ+ content in Montgomery County Schools.

In Tamer Mahmoud v. Monica B. McKnight, parents sought to reinstate a MCPS policy that would allow them to opt their children out of reading and discussing books with LGBTQ+ characters in elementary schools. The parents argued the content in these books was a form of indoctrination that violated their families' religious beliefs.

It was a federal court in MD.
As long as there are other choices about where parents can send their children to school, including charter schools and home school, I don't see this as a " fundamental right" either. Although I would certainly vote against any school board member who wanted to require elementary school students to read content about gay people, I don't think it rises to the level of freedom of religion unless someone is forcing all schools and all parents to do it.
