The wife and I just got back from a road trip with some friends who drove a Tesla.  It wasn't bad.  There were frequent stops for recharging, but the car will guide you to the rechargers, and there wasn't ever a problem finding rechargers.  In a 500 mile day, we had to stop 3 times for recharging, which took about 15 to 20 minutes each time, but during that time, we went to the rest room, got something to eat, and walked around a little.

We were in a Tesla Model Y, and my review of the car is that it has extremely quick acceleration, rides very smoothly, handles very well, and it's very roomy and comfortable.

The energy secretary wasn't driving a Tesla.  The non-Tesla chargers have a very bad reputation for being out of service.  If you drive a Tesla, there are lots of chargers available.
