Statistically it looks like we could use some help at corner. Oh well. Say, how's that [BLEEP] project working out?

Tre Herndon is benefiting from our pass rush actually existing this season. Same with the rest of the cover guys, he's still not that good. If we would have lost Tyson Campbell last year, we would have gotten torched because we had such a lack of pressure, this year Buster Brown came in to play outside and it didn't feel like we were losing a step.

Pass the shovel when you're done digging that trench for your heels....criminy.

Didn't think we were losing a step from Campbell to Buster? And you wonder why you are mocked or dismissed.

Not bad for 2 million bucks.

Year two in Caldwell's system with some tweaks made to coverage schemes is allowing Herndon to be less of a liability and occasionally even make some good plays. 

So far he's only been fully exposed once. 
Andy Reid and Mahomes picked on him for 135 yards in week two. 
he gave up one TD vs ATL. 
And he let Carr connect 8 times for 54 yards but nothing big last week. 
Not a terrible start for a guy everyone wanted to be a backup. 

He has been sent on the DB blitz 8 times with 3 hurries and 2QB knock downs. 
He's allowing a 76.3% completion rate (not good)
He's allowing a 106 QBR when thrown on (also not good) 
He has a 16.7% missed tackle rate and 5 missed tackles

Anyway - yeah - that's what you get for 2.58 mil 

A good play here and there, a bunch of middling play, and an occasional shellacking

Junior may be coming back soon to offer up some depth to the defense backfield.

He was good for a long time,  elite for a short while. I think under different circumstances that Ramsey would have rewrote the book for Jaguars DB's.

Jeff Lageman spoke highly of Tre Herndon during review the tape on 1010 today. Said is playing at a high level and “nobody is supplantting Tre anytime soon.” What Caldwell does matches with what Tre does best which is play zone and disguise coverages and blitz.

5 missed tackles on the year so far is a bit unexpected as that's usually a strength in his game - but he's only looked bad in coverage in two games this year. (NOLA and KC) 
 So kudos to Tre for stepping up so far. He has been less of a liability in coverage than I expected him to be. Playing lots of zone in Caldwell's system for the second year is indeed a big factor in keeping his play respectable. 

The way Caldwell is mixing coverages and disguising the looks in year 2 now that players know the system is helping all of them. Rayshawn, Cisco, Wingard, Herndon, D-Will - all of them have a better grasp on it.

Here's a fun tidbit I just noticed - Tre is getting 2.5M salary this year but only counts 1.2 against the cap. It's a one-year deal, and no notes on OTC or spotrac to explain the discrepancy.

I know I shouldn't post this lest JF24 make it a bit messy in here (grin), but at that number Tre counts less against our cap than Hasty does! What is this sorcery?

I like Trey Herndon.  Dude's been a baller since he arrived here.  

I'm not sure why everyone hates on a guy that busts his [BLEEP] every game he plays.  Yeah, he makes mistakes, but he's also johnny on the spot more times than most of you haters will admit.

Herndon is a good guy, man.  I'd take Herndon over Jaylen Ramsey's [BLEEP] [BLEEP] attitude any day of the week.  He's a team player.  Sometimes team players are better than elite [BLEEP] holes for the overall morale of a squad.

Apologies in advance for repeating myself from the Caldwell thread but last year we were all wondering what the identity of this defense would be. 

I think we're seeing it now. 

It's a back seven who can read and react quickly from off-man or (primarily) zone coverage position and fly to the football. 
This is what a bend but don't break defense is supposed to look like. The stuff of Gus Bradley's dreams. 

We lead the league in fewest explosive plays allowed. A hallmark of the "bend don't break" philosophy. 

Now if they ever get the pass rush from the front really humming - it'll be something really special. 

Caldwell's ability to get these guys in their second year of his system tuned into disguising coverages has really made a difference   - and the tutelage of the ILBs has shown up in a big way. Really fun to watch these guys swarm to the ball. 

Better offenses will still take advantage of the soft spots, but they aren't as soft as they were last year and the clamp down on the big play has been a welcome change. The back seven are anticipating where the ball is going much better than they were a year ago.

Getting quality play out of backup level guys like Herndon and Wingard is a strong testament to the quality and instruction of the scheme.

Another strong game by Tre. Caused a sack on Levis on a blitz.

this year's Andrew Winguard. A guy who was always a solid rotation player and contributor in his specific role. Probably maligned more than deserved. But now in danger of the scales tipping too far the other direction. Teams need players like Winguard and Herndon. Core players, good teammates, not stars, but valuable in the team's overall success.

Agreed, but we also need the Browns and Juniors to start supplanting guys like Herdon too. Gotta replace old and expensive with young and cheap while keeping the same output as often as possible.
