I did think he was good but not elite-level like he’s been this year. Even when he’s not recording sacks which doesn’t happen that often, he’s disruptive.
Hold up. Are people suggesting Josh should be getting TJ money?
This year their numbers are comperable, and Josh will get paid as a top 10 edge rusher, but until he proves otherwise with consistency, Josh is not = TJ Watt.
This season? ok.

Yes they are suggesting Allen be the top paid DE/LB. It's crazy but they don't care if the team can't fill OL, DL, other LB, etc holes because they want to pay Allen top money for 1 season. They are probably the same ones who wanted to pay the last Jags DE to hit the market.

The whole question will be how much money he wants. If you can get 2 starters for his cost, it becomes a discussion.

Josh has played 81% of the Jags defensive snaps (831)
Watt has played 84% of the stillers defensive snaps (901)
(he has started every game)
So - actually - Josh Allen has essentially equalled his stats despite having a much lower snap count.
Give #41 seventy more snaps and he could easily be tied or ahead in every category.
Watt has been hurt all of Dec. but is still playing. If he has more snaps, it just makes him more valuable than Allen since you need a backup for Allen.

I always knew he was a solid run defender, but I guess I overlooked how good he was at rushing the passer because the numbers rarely matched up.
That's on me, i'm glad he's here... gotta keep him.

Yeah but his #s should stay up there now with someone that's talented on the opposite side in Travon .

If the Jags did what I was pounding the table for, for the past two years (and especially this past off season), he wouldn't be getting anywhere close to TJ money and we'd already have him locked up. Instead, at least half of this fan base wanted to trade him last year because he apparently wasn't any good and was easily replaceable.
The team proceeded to then double down and they [BLEEP] around and found out. Now they're going to have to pony up top dollar due to it.
Allen has always been consistent. The problem is he hasn't had a capable Pass Rusher on the other side of him since his rookie season. He finally has another one now in Walker who's getting better and better as the weeks go on.
At the end of the day, it's a what have you done for me lately league and lately, Allen is one of the best in the business. He isn't going to get paid due to what he did in years prior, he's going to get paid due to what he has did lately, aka this season. And what he has did this season deserves to be paid top dollar.

You seem to forget we live in a day and age where once a player out performs his contract they either get it restructered for more money or holdout.
Theres not a player on this team i'm considering paying before Allen, dude has absolutely earned it.
Those stat comparisons are very interesting

That is 100% bull [BLEEP]
The percentages are nearly identical
Squealers just have their defense on the filed more
In no way does that add anything to Watts value. And everybody is playing hurt at this point in the season
Watt has a backup too, LOL

That's been the dynamic in the NFL for a long time now at the premium positions.
One good season is enough if it is the most recent season.
It also helps that Allen's tape shows consistently good play even when not racking up sacks every week.
His money will be near Watt's deal IMO. As has been said many times - the market decides it more so than the negotiators for the team.
Allen's agent is going to walk into those meetings with three teams in his back pocket who need a pass rusher and have space to pay TJ Watt money for one. That will be his leverage.

Not really, we can just tag him. Could next year as well if we wanted to

and why would he play under a tag? Look at our pass rush, he has more leverage than we do.

He's not forfeiting the tag money during his prime earning years. The risk in tagging him is pissing him off so he doesn't want to sign here. You use the tag as leverage, you shouldn't actually want to use the tag, though, if you're GM.
They'll tag him and get a deal done before the season starts like they did with Engram
(01-03-2024, 03:03 PM)imtheblkranger Wrote: [ -> ]They'll tag him and get a deal done before the season starts like they did with Engram
That's definitely a viable way to use the leverage of the tag without the intention of actually having him play under the tag. Hope it doesn't backfire though.

This is how is likely plays out. Gives them more time to negotiate but the Jags should 100% not use the tag for the season.
The Jags RARELY have homegrown talent worthy of a second contract. Now they have two (Lawrence and Allen) and some people want to nickel and dime them?

All that does is extend the inevitable situation I've laid out to a later date.

Only of he continues to have a season like he did this year. If he has a season like the last couple years he's not getting top 5 edge money.

This is what I think happens as well. Not sure if the deal will get done before the start of next season but it would be nice.

I think he is smarter than a player we had here in the past. He's not going to lose that 21 mil. The team always has the leverage with the tag. That's the whole point of the tag.
