The IRS wouldn't need to do this if the Government would quit spending our tax dollars like a drunken sailor on shore leave for the first time in a year........ And yes, I know ALL political parties are guilty of pork barrel spending.

IRS penalties on American taxpayers surged nearly 300% last year

The IRS hit taxpayers with a record $7B in penalties last year

The IRS hit Americans with $7 billion in tax penalties in 2023, a record-high level that marks a nearly 300% increase from the prior year.

The majority of the fines were levied against those who underpaid their estimated quarterly income taxes, which is predominantly freelancers, gig workers and other self-employed individuals.

You're saying the IRS wouldn't need to enforce the tax laws if the government didn't spend so much? I would hope they would enforce the tax laws regardless.

this...
I would hope the fines for folks who underpaid just once would be pretty low, but they need to ratchet up for the folks who repeatedly underpay.

The tax code should be made simpler though.

Read the article and see just who they are targeting...... It's the little guy, the average person just trying to make a living and just might be barely scraping by. People who probably have made a simple mistake while filling out/filing their taxes. People that can't afford a professional accountant or tax service. The IRS need to consider the circumstances of why and who before they levy outrageous fines on everyone.

I totally agree with the above statement in bold.......

as for me, I Support The Flat Tax!
Estimated taxes are very easy to calculate.  All you have to do is take the previous year's tax, and divide by 4.  As long as those 4 payments at least equal the previous year's tax, there won't be any penalty for underpayment.  If you make over $75,000, it has to be 110% instead of 100%.  You don't need a professional tax service to figure that out.
We fought a war over an unjust tax that King George imposed on the then colonies over tea........ Maybe it's time for another revolution. We need not fire a shot this time if we get lucky, we just need to vote out 99% of Washington and abolish certain agencies that the government controls. Now, if the people in power try to impose their will and keep control, I say it would be time, and justified, for another "The British are coming" Moment..........
The only way we're getting rid of this government is by total default. It's coming, and it's gong to be horrific.
The Revolution against our elected officials is upon us..

Very well could happen!!

Taxes suck. They especially suck when they're being used at the hands of the wrong people who get away with murder financially with off shore bank accounts and the wide variety of legal loop holes they are able to exploit because they have the resources to do so.

I wish we had a form or a way of deciding where our taxes go every month when they come out. Maybe I want my money to specifically go towards something directly instead of into a large quagmire of nonsense that allows crooks and cronies to throw it around like child's play.

I should be able to have a say in it. Maybe I want it directly going towards better roads and transportation, our disabled veterans, our public school system, the homeless, etc. Maybe I don't want any of my money going towards [BLEEP] war causes or some [BLEEP]'s plane ride across the globe for vacation while he tells me I can't have a cheeseburger anymore because "MuH EnViRoNmEnT!".
I'm old enough to remember when the left promised the public that the expansion of the IRS was just to target the rich. Anyone remember that debate?

I'm still waiting on Joe Biden to cure cancer like he said he was going to.

Does the article say that penalties charged to poor or middle class people have gone up? Maybe it is just the rich.
Lol.
This is a sore topic with me this year. The wife and I always claim zero, and always have. We are a family of five with three child dependents. In the past we have always gotten back thousands at tax time. The previous year was around 5K, and 8k the year before that. Imagine my surprise when we got our tax bill and owed 1,800. This is a massive change on a year over year basis.

We are not self employed, She is a teacher and I work in middle management. We are not rich and do not have excessive income. I know others that had a similar large swing in the same direction, our situation is not unique. Luckily we had enough in the bank to make the payment. How many of those new penalties were families that are just getting by or are having to live on credit cards due to the inflation of the last few years. I would venture a guess that a lot of those new fines were middle class families that got caught by the same situation as me, expecting a refund as usual and getting a large bill instead.
Are you sure you're not rich? I mean, they did say they were only going after the rich, so there's a good chance you just didn't realize you had a lot of extra money.
If I was rich, I wouldn't have worked 65 - 75 hours a week every week for the last 20 months. I've only dropped into the 50 hour range 3 times in that span.

I don't know, man. That sounds an awful lot like rich people talk to me. I don't know any poor people who work that much... only the wealthy.
Maybe I will get there one day.
Man, everyone in the world sees America as rich. That's why the IRS has to take our money to redistribute it to them.

The fact that he extinguished Covid and Ebola is not good enough for you?
