I give empathy where it's deserved.

You don’t “give” empathy. It’s an ability you either have or you don’t.

If you can't use common sense in order to determine who deserves empathy and who doesn't, that's not my fault.

Anyway, according to my aunt they told her they're fine but it was scary as hell and they don't recommend it. They're not sure of damage to property yet but nothing immediate was evident other than utilities are out.

Hopefully we hear good news from NYCJags soon.

All good here! Thanks

Just a bunch of back breaking work to get somewhere near normalish

No major damage and no flooding.

Got a crew meeting me at 9AM tomorrow to help finish what I started today and we will knock it out one way or the other.
Power and cell service returned to the area around 2PM today. We got very lucky the winds weren't stronger - and the inland tidal waterways did not surge like they did with Ian awhile back.

The trouble with common sense is that most people are stupid. "Wide and broad..." and all that.

You’re conflating empathy with sympathy. Common mistake.

Honestly, empathy is emotionally draining and my tank is bone dry these days. Too many people playing victim talking over the real ones just makes me tune out to all of it. It sucks but it's where I find myself when I take a look around.

As you described, it’s the emotional drain of perpetual victimhood which drives an overarching feeling of ambivalence and hopelessness. The video someone posted a few weeks ago of a guy talking about how everything seems ‘off’ these days encapsulates it well.
