I'm not one who knows what is acceptable for the Jags next season when it comes to $$$ to spend. But I know who I want to see replaced this season and who I'd like them to replace that person with.
In this order...
#1 Tre Smith - OG from KC -Replaces Scherff
#2 Budda Baker - safety from Arizona - Replaces Andre Cisco
#3 Byron Murphy - DB Minnesota Vikings - Replaces Darby
#4 Chris Godwin - WR Tampa Bay Bucs - Replaces Kirk or Davis (This is the least I expect because I think Davis and Kirk will both be back..unfortunately)
The rest of the squad would have to be improved through the draft... and I'm assuming the Jags have one of the first three picks which they'll use for a DB.
Just going to use #1 as an example. 6th round selection by the best organization in the league of late. First off, maybe we should just start hitting with our own picks, instead of drafting late round picks and cutting them immediately. Second, you don’t think the best Qb in the league gets away with some extra holding from his offensive line? Need to stop thinking about free agency and start drafting well.
Mahomes is on an extremely QB friendly deal, so if Smith reaches FA, there is a reason.

I understand about building from within, with the draft.
I listed 4 players.
Who, currently or in the draft..would be a better guard than Tre Smith? I'm of the mind that we also bring in youth at that position. I'm just saying I want an All Pro in their prime on the Jags offensive line. If there is a 2nd rounder that fits that bill for next season...I'm good. I'd want that 2nd rounder AND Tre Smith.
But you're right. KC will probably extend him AND their center.
Trey Smith will cost something like 5 years $105-110 million, $65-70 million guaranteed. That would mean an out in 3 years (2028) with like $12-15 dead money cap.
I'm tired of the Jags trying to fix the roster by signing a bunch of players their former teams didn't want to keep.

Chiefs want to keep Trey Smith, they just cannot afford him with their current salary cap situation.

He doesn't think Smith is that good since he hasn't made it to the Pro Bowl even though he has been one of the better guards in the league since he was drafted.
Let's assemble the most talented team in history again and see what happens! Don't worry, guy, look over there. You need to relax.

Same. Get a few cheap vets to plug holes but build through the draft.

Exactly. Veteran free agency is for plugging holes, so you don't have to draft for need. That's it.

We need to try to find the next Beckton AND the next Stoutland.
Would be better than just swiping a castoff who happens to have a super bowl ring.
That requires a GM, coaches, and/or scouts that can identify talent that may have been misused before and would fit in the system that is being implemented here.
I love to have those people in the building, but the Jags haven't had those kinds of force multipliers as coaches or FO in awhile.

Age is a concern. Budda is getting up there and Godwin is brittle. Aside, from a starting RG for depth, I'd like them to just build through the draft. There are some solid younger pieces on both sides, but the team needs an infusion of toughness on the interior lines and more raw talent in the secondary.
