The Carolinas are doing a better job but they also have a much easier situation in general. If they're going to have 100 mph winds, it'll be wet. And they have much less people spending much less money for houses there, so you don't see as many subdivisions tightly packed on hillsides the way you do in CA.
In general NC does do a better job but western NC is a tinder box thanks to all of the destruction from Helene. They have a boat load of dead trees and underbrush that has yet to be cleared away or control burned and with major winds coming this week on top of lack of rain, low humidity and dew point, whatever is already on fire will burn like crazy. We are supposed to get rain across the state but not until after the high winds come through.
As for your comment about houses and subdivisions, I don't understand the relevance. Just because you don't see houses doesn't mean people aren't losing something. Many folks have tree farms on those hillsides as well as regular type farms, campgrounds, golf courses, etc., not to mention national campgrounds and national parks/forests that bring in a lot of revenue.

No, many already lost their homes in the floods from Helene. Now they're trying to hang onto their livelihoods. Plenty lost family members as well. But no big deal.
