So is somebody prematurely calling a win against Cincy a gimme because they aren't good in preseason?

So, whether win or lose, we can lament the outcome ahead of time?

That's just asinine.  Cincy is a good, talented team with decent depth.

Quote:I just posted about this in the "My thoughts of the first 2 preseason games" thread:

Cincy is not a good measuring stick in the preseason. They usually look terrible. They don't game-plan. They play extremely vanilla. Starters don't seem to go full-speed/full-effort.

Preseason for them is all about avoiding key injuries (they've been bitten by that many times over the years); and evaluating talent for backup/depth. That's about it.

Marvin Lewis publicly said so a while back. He asked Rex Ryan not to play exotic offenses prior to a preseason matchup. Lewis said they didn't want to game-plan for that,, they just wanted to evaluate players. Rex Ryan obliged him.

Seriously, the Bengals in preseason are very weak,, and have been for a long time.

The scary part of this for Bengals regular season and potential post-season opponents is even w/o game planning and being extremely vanilla,  all of their units, starters and depth,  looked strong in their last pre-season game.    I continue to be impressed by the Bengals personnel department.

Being that the third pre-season game is the most important one ( relatively speaking ) for an NFL team,  the Jags starters,  backups,  and 3rd stringers are all going to be tested even if the Bengals as expected do less game planning than most teams would this week.

I didn't prematurely call a "win" against Cincy a gimme. You totally misunderstood that if taken from me. That's not what I meant at all.

I've just learned over time from watching them in preseason that what we usually see from them is almost the exact opposite from what is seen in the regular season.

Last year, the Bengals were dreadful against Tampa (Bengals looked great in regular season,,Tampa sucked).

The year Corey Dillon was picked up by the NE Pats: Bengals looked terrific against them in Preseason, the Pats looked bad; then Cincy was "meh" in the regular season, while NE won the Superbowl that year (played in Jax).

There's a ton of examples. I just don't get anything (predictions) from watching Cincy or the other teams playing against them in preseasons. The only impact to the regular season I see is if players get injured or not.

Just my personal opinion of Cincy preseason football, that's all. Take from the preseason match up what you will,, it's okay. I'll wait for the real bullets to start flying in the regular season to actually start believing what I see.

FWIW

I thought your first post on it was just good info from someone 'in-market.'

Didn't see any 'premature call' or 'gimme' inference.
I would like to see Ramsey matched up with AJ Green on a few plays.

Rookie transition? These guys know they have to watch film, and he's not a rookie, especially not a film room rookie since he was hurt all season. Hopefully they're more so showing him what to look for than they are showing him that he needs to watch film.

I was thinking the day about Jack running with the 1s. Poz is a vet who doesn't need that many reps but it's a good measuring stick for Jack to let him go against Cincys 1s.
Fowler, Ramsey, and Jack on the field at the same time? On ESPN? Nice!

It's always better to overstate expectations. Even if you are stating the obvious / known half the time, it's better to have them on the table.

Even better, the game will be on NBC, with the broadcast team of Mike Tirico and Chris Collingsworth.

Maybe Fowler's just studying the wrong kind of film.  His dance, dance, spin move looks like something from a Wham! video.

Quote:I think that this week's game against the Bengals will be a much better measuring stick of where were at.  They have been a great team for awhile now, and have been picked by many to be a super bowl contender this year.  Also Gus said after the Tampa game that our starters are going to get a ton of play in the 3rd game.  I could see them getting a couple of series in the 3rd quarter.  I also have a feeling we will see the debut of Beachum, so it'll be interesting to see where he's at.  Just one more game to get through with no injuries before resting all of the starters until the regular, so everyone say your prayers and cross your fingers.  Go Jags!
It's the pre-season; it's not supposed to be used as a measuring stick for our actual capabilities. It's only real purpose is to get the starters some reps and then get them out of there before they get hurt and to evaluate lower tier talent. Yes, in the third pre-season game the starters do play longer, but it still isn't a legitimate scenario to compare one team to another.

The regular season will be starting soon...then we'll see.

This made me smile. Like coaches are going to just lock ole Fowler up in the film room, alone; just watch son. Don't care what you see...
Bengals are dirty players, I'd rather not play our starters for too long.

When you ask the DC about Jalen Ramsey:

Yeah, I said it.

Bold statement my friend. Very bold.

I politely disagree, but I can certainly understand where you're coming from here. Wouldn't shock me one bit for Robinson to put up bigger numbers this year.

NBC is showing it.

I am excited to watch them play together.

Interesting

I'm fine with that.

And, it's why I'm glad we didn't ignore pass rush in the draft.

Just like points - how many pass rushers do you need?

More.

It's always the answer.
