I'm not certain why more players don't got the CFL route once they are cut in the NFL.

The CFL would be loaded with more American talent, but they have rules on how many non Canadians can be on each roster.

OK --- that explains it.  After seeing Rainey, I got to thinking how cool it would be to utilize the CFL as the NFL minor league system but I guess the rule you mention above protect the canadian players from being totally ousted by our lower tiered players.

I still can't believe we don't have a minor league system. There are so many players that if they just had 2 or 3 years to play and get reps, could develop into solid NFL players. These bubble guys barley even get training camp reps and then a couple quarters of preseason and that's it.

The problem is - who is going to spend the tremendous sums needed, with little expectation of getting a return on their investment?

College football is the real minor leagues.

The NBA/MLB both have done it

MLB Triple A may be justified but the D league is a waste.  Given the foreign leagues, that should be enough to retain talent that may be considered as depth to an NBA roster.

Yup, and I can't blame them. They want to build the game in their country, to further the sport, get better individually,. etc., it's better to have people from your country as the majority of the team.

The MLS is like that here.

Totally different animal. The NBA has very small rosters with no injuries. MLB has financial structures with the minor leagues that the NFL wouldn't have with a minor league. And they don't have the roster/injury issues of football.

It's been tried and hasn't worked.
