Quote:Don't think we will be top 10 but definitely a hugely improved unit.

If they aren't top 10, no matter how improved, ppl will have an excuse to go after Bradley. It's simpler to just say I hate gus no matter what.

My personal expectation is top 16 overall, atleast. With more experience, this defense will easily be top ten down the road. I do expect the run defense to be top five or top ten, and the pass defense to improve to atleast top twenty. Our pass defense shouldn't be franchise-record-breaking bad anymore. We have enough horses along the DL now to atleast be top half of the league in pressures AND sacks.

If the offense, and specifically the running game, improves, a top 16 defense should be good enough to win the AFC South. If the defense gels quicker than expected, look out.
When Ficken came out of the tunnel I thought we signed Johnny Manziel. They look pretty similar.

Ramsey looked very good on coverage all night, as did Prince. I noticed Jack was running with the ones as MLB at some points too.

I have a feeling Ficken might beat Myers. Just seems like Myers has the yips or something and can't shake it.

Blake looked good, his pocket presence is improved, he's got a tighter spiral. And that fade was a beauty.

Fowler is a monster. I can't wait to see him attacking someone other than our OL.

There's a noticeable difference in the way Washington runs this defense. Press coverage, Gipson roaming around. Guys are actually being covered for once.

I noticed they had at least one package that had Ngakoue and Fowler on the ends. I'd like to see that a little more.

I saw a lot of good things, I'm really excited about how it's looking. We'll get a much better understanding this Thursday.
Now that I finally have a chance to watch it, I'll simply jot a few notes as I do...

  • Fowler makes his presence known early and often. I haven't been this giddy since Byron Leftwich was drafted, but Byron held out most of his rookie camp.

  • Tony Washington dropped a couple rare deep passes from Henne. While they weren't the easiest to catch, making them might have helped him edge into the competition between Arrileious Benn and Bryan Walters. With the drop he's quickly becoming an afterthought.

  • Alualu batted down a Henne pass, and the O-man jokes about how often he's seen that from him. I sincerely feel his roster spot can be better utilized.

  • Joekel is definitely an explosive run blocker capable of opening holes. LG just might be his calling. I suspect that overall he'd look better playing between Linder and Beachum than he does between Shatley and Wells, both of whom were routinely abused. All of that said, I still question Joekel's leverage on the goal line. In a live goal line drill, Malik Jackson had little trouble standing up Joekel keeping him from moving an inch.

  • Shatley at one point was blown backwards killing a run play, and overall appears worthless in the run game.

  • Extra point by Myers creeps just inside the top of the upright.

  • Koyack and Jacobs drop easy passes... they really can't afford to do that.

  • I'm getting the sense that Jamal Robinson and Rashad Lawrence are fighting for one PS spot at WR.

  • DRob showed up, and perhaps is starting to edge out Jonas Gray. That's a tough call there for the 4th RB spot behind Ivory, Yeldon and Grant. ...Grant btw had another HUGE kick return. ...then again, so did Rashad Greene. With all the luck our returners are having, we might need to question our coverage units.

  • Grant also had a short catch behind the line of scrimmage that he turned into an explosive play for big yards down the sideline. Late in the game he follows this up with a breakout TD run from scrimmage.

  • Jordan Tripp is making the roster. That makes your locks at LB... Telvin, Poz, Jack, Skuta and Tripp. I'm thinking this leaves only one spot for backup OTTO between Ryan Davis, Armbrister and Chris Smith. I'm wondering if Tyrone Holmes is still in the mix at OTTO, but I suspect he's now battling Bjorne Werner for a possible 3rd LEO spot

  • I keep spotting ARob being double teamed, but that's now to be expected and isn't slowing him down in the slightest. Quite frankly ARob is one of the few best non-QBs in this league.

  • Bortles had accuracy issues throughout this scrimmage with a few uncatchable passes that might have been INTs in a real game. With all his INTs so far in practice I'm starting to wonder if this should be a concern.

  • On the flip side, Bortles looks much better in the red zone. Hopefully this means no more stalled drives.

  • Myers not even close from 55 yards while Ficken is perfect with a long of 53...the competition this Preseason will be as intense as it gets.

  • Unlike ARob, Fowler and Marqise... Hurns is not exactly in mid-season form just yet. He might be taking the classic veteran line that says "You want to peak when the season starts, not when camp starts."

  • QB Brandon Allen and TE Braedon Bowman both excite me as young players. I look forward to watching them more and am confident they've both  made the 53-man roster.

  • Marcedes, Cyp and Prince all had a good scrimmage.

The D was ranked #31 last year.  I expect them to be somewhere in the #10 - #20 region all season, hopefully being closer to #10 by the end of the season.

Oh, and #DumpHenne.

I totally expect them to be top 20 at least all season as well, although with this much talent who knows? The sky's the limit.

LOL... reports are Henne has looked as good as he's ever looked his entire career.  Yep, time to dump him.

Jags02, I'm starting to agree that Grant is making the roster.... I liked Gray in his short stint late last season, but it seems like he doesn't offer anything on special teams. Which is the breaking point. Grant can return kicks, and Robinson can be useful on special teams.
Am I the only one that thought Grant's big plays were of a suspect variety?

A LB touched him and pulled off, so yeah, that long run for a TD probably should've been downed for lIke a 3 yard gain. Oh well. Let's see what Grant does in preseason. Basically no one else on the roster can compete with him as a kick returner.

Greene can, he should be our kick and punt returner

Well... his kick return was a little weird as well, and Greene legit returned one so I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say no one can compete with him.

He looked the part of a speed back though. Definitely just need to see more. As of now I'd probably give a slight edge to Grant over Robinson but I agree, we need to see it through preseason.

I like Grant as a KR, but Greene has that better vision. He was completely untouched on his return

Oh yeah, definitely would want Greene back there instead, but the team hadn't had him run kickoffs. Atleast not that I remember.
I think whoever wins the battle between Grant/DRob/Gray should get KR duties while Greene returns punts.

I don't want to cut him, but I want him to beat out the young QB to get a spot. I would like to see him take a few chances during the preseason. He looked hesitant to pull the trigger in a scrimmage game.

From everything I've heard, he's played much better than Allen and Wittek. Allen was even running with the 4th team at one point. He's still easily the 2nd best qb on this roster.
Quote:Dan Skuta - Underrated! Making plays out there.

Underrated?   8 years in the league - 99 games - 70 solo tackles + 56 assisted tackles = 126 total tackles.

In contrast, POZ, who is perceived to be on the downward side of his career played 14 games last season and racked up 73 solo tackles + 33 assisted = 103 total tackles

Don't let scrimmage fool you.  Skuta is our version of Rudy
