Watching last night just made me think how good of a job Dave Caldwell has done bringing talent into this team. You could say he has 3 potential top rounds busts (Joeckel, Cyprien & Lee). Joeckel looked like he could turn his career around as a guard which would save the pick for me. Cyprien looked much better for the most part last night, I think this year is the final chance for him too but I'm confident now he's able to focus on his position he'll do well. Lee is most likely to be a bust right now but I'll reserve judgement, he's still got 2 years left here and his talent is plain to see.
Bortles is Bortles, he's a good QB. Hopefully he can continue to progress.
ARob could be a top 3 WR in the league by the end of the year.
Fowler looks so good it's almost scary. I'm trying not to get too excited but it's hard not to when we've watched bums like Branch and a washed up Chris Clemons
flailing around like a magikarp
Yeldon is going to be good, last year he missed some preseason due to his injury at the scrimmage but came on strong as the year went on, especially when the clown coming in for him was awful. He should pair up well with Ivory.
Ramsey & Jack I'm not going to judge. Both are exciting and both are amazing picks on paper.
Then you look at the guys he's picked up in the mid & later rounds. Linder, Cann, Greene, T. Smith etc.
Caldwell should be extended no matter how Gus does this year. He deserves a second coach if Gus gets fired. I know Gus was his pick but he's been too good at drafting to let him go based on whiffing on his first coach.
Magikarp reference. Love it. And so true.
call me crazy, but I don't know how anybody can say Cyprien is improved.
First of all, there was no tackling allowed. So even though he was in the box and around the ball, that doesn't mean he would've made solid tackles consistently.
When asked to cover Julius Thomas, he gave up a touchdown. He will get a ton of tackles, yes - like he does every year. But his biggest issue is the lack of impact plays and his defensive blunders. If he can cut down on the mistakes, he will be an average strong safety. He needs to cut down on the mistakes AND start making impact plays to ever be considered a good safety.
I haven't seen anything that would indicate Cyprien is better. I am confident this will be his last year with the team. Same goes with Joeckel.
The 2013 draft class will more than likely not have a single player on this roster at this point next year.
A couple points not mentioned...
Marcedes owned Skuta.
Props to Shatley for doing a solid job at center.

I agree partially with this, but that TD on him was just a perfect throw.
IIRC, he had a good preseason last year too. We will see. It would seem logical that he would be improved with the infusion of talent on defense, though.
Pretty skeptical on Cyp being anything more than a slightly below average strong safety. Guys a box safety who struggles to tackle in space. Has his flashes here and there but generally he just isn't a good football player.
Anyone have a gif of Bortles fade pass? I can't wait till they upload it, I wasn't able to watch it live

So nice to see. I'm still not used to having a QB actually work on himself and get better lol

That fade was absolutely perfect. Did he hit any of those last season?

That was actually pretty damn good coverage by Cyp. It was just a better thrown ball.

I don't think so. They usually went out of bounds. I remember him throwing more jump balls to ARob in the corners than he ever did fades.

He hit one in his rookie year to Lee, but I can't remember any others. He did throw one up to Robinson, but that was just freakish athleticism by A-Rob.

It really was. He was right with him and had a hand in there, just a perfectly placed ball by Blake.

You could argue that when you line up like that, you need to press and jam the tight end at the line of scrimmage. He just let him run right by him. He kept up pretty well, but it still wasn't enough.

Not to mention JT has like 6" on him in height.

Why would you choose that argument when it was a probowl TE and a qb who threw for 35tds last year? I guess anything to pile on cyp...

Because? What do you want me to say? Great coverage cyp! Too bad the qb threw a perfect ball and the tight end got open.
Cyp needs to make impact plays. There were only a few things we could really evaluate yesterday, being that tackling wasn't allowed... So yes, I will evaluate and criticize cyp when appropriate. It's a message board, the entire point is to discuss things and overanalyze.
Can we agree that cyp needs to make impact plays against good players? He needs to pick off a good qb every now and then. He needs to cover a good tight end sometimes. He needs to tackle and force fumbles from receivers and running backs more than he has in his 3 year career.
I'm not just blindly assuming he's going to play significantly better in his 4th year like some people here do. He needs to show us all he belongs here and deserves a contract extension. I would be stoked if he managed to do that, but my money is on him being average again and Caldwell addressing the position in free agency and/or the draft next year.

Everyone thinks he needs to play better. That's not the argument. The offense executed the play perfectly. Let's give them credit it deserves. You pile on cyp for a play 90% of safeties would have been beat on, be my guest. The message board doesn't require objectivity, it just makes your argument sound is all.
