I'm trying to remember where Smith was at in his career in '03... wasn't he still on his 1,000 yard / season streak?
And Jack wanted to TRADE him?!?!

Wouldn't be surprised if it was due to
known drug problems. Eh?
Wasn't 03 when he got popped for substance abuse and missed a few games?
Also, were Del Rio and Smith on the same Dallas roster? Maybe Jack knew Jimmy had some nose candy problems from way back.

Impossible. If Dallas would have known about Jimmy having issues, they would have kept him, and probably overpaid him, and not allowed him to come here!! Jerry has a thing for bad boys.

JSmoov's first year for Dallas was 1992.
In short, no they weren't on the same roster.

Thanks for that Bullseye. I wonder if Jack wanted to move Smith to gain draft picks or if he just wanted him out of the building.
It could have been both.
Remember, JDR was in Dallas in the aftermath of the Herschel Walker trade. He saw first hand what that infusion of draft picks did for Dallas.
Jimmy started dropping passes in 2003, so it makes sense that Jack was willing to trade him. In 2004 and 2005, Jimmy was plagued with drops.

Even with those drops, he was still posting 1,000+ yard seasons. With as bad as Shack and Co. were at finding WR talent, I shudder to think how bad this team would have been without Smith.
What really could of been.....
Jimmy gets suspended for a year, gets clean comes back and plays 5 more years and ends top 5 in history.

No need to shudder Deacon, you actually saw it during those 2-14, 4-12, 3-13 years we had not too long ago.

Whoa, that wouldn't have been good. I can see the thought process tho. 'We got to clear out room for the great young receivers we are gonna draft next year, and get value for Smith while we still can.' That would have been a surefire way to make '04 and '05 losing seasons.

He wouldn't have gone 5 more years. He was already what, 36? when he retired. I definitely wished he hadn't failed the drug test tho (which is what I always assumed happened). We were definitely robbed of at least 2 or 3 more years.

But he was still our best receiver by far.
He had 1 more year left in the tank. He probably would have caught 65 balks for 850ish yards and 4 touchdowns.

NFL Network has a series called, "A Football Life," where they profile players and teams. They had a show on Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell.
Jimmy Smith addressed any number of topics on that show, including his time in Dallas, which according to him is when he started using drugs.
He also addressed his retirement. He indicated he had not tested positive for cocaine when he retired.
He said he was "tired." He said he was tired the year before and was tired that off season. Take that for whatever it's worth to you. He seemed forthcoming throughout to me, but given the nature of addiction, you never know about these things.
They interviewed Coughlin, Brunell, Boselli and Keenan about Jimmy Smith, and to a man they indicated they knew nothing about his drug use and were floored by the charges. They all hope he gets/keeps it together. Smith said he had people within his circle that would have held him accountable, had he not hidden his addiction so well. After years, however, he stopped caring.
It was my first time seeing it, and it was a very good documentary. Some great memories that still give me goosebumps to this day, along with some painful, cringe inducing stuff, too.
