Former NFL head coach and influential defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan has died, agent James Solano confirmed Tuesday. He was 82.

Ryan, who coached in the NFL for 35 seasons, was known for building some of football's top defenses behind a relentlessness that focused on creating havoc on the field.

He was on the defensive staff of the Super Bowl-winning New York Jets in Super Bowl III in 1968. The Chicago Bears carried Ryan off the field next to coach Mike Ditka after Ryan's vaunted "46 Defense" helped the Bears destroy the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX.

He later was head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals, and he finished his career with a 55-55-1 record in his seven seasons as a head coach. His son, Rex, was on his dad's staff for two years with the Cardinals in the 1990s.
His claim to fame will always be the DC performance for the 85 Bears in my mind.  That defense was a nightmare to play against.

Wow. The coaching world lost a great one today.

The Doug Plank 46 Defense was probably his greatest contribution to the sport of football.

I hope you've found peace Buddy.

RIP Buddy Ryan!

You certainly rank with the most colorful and innovative coaches that I've ever seen!
RIP, Buddy Ryan.  A great loss to the sport.

RIP "punch Kevin Gilbride in the face on the sidelines man"!
RIP

He and his teams were fun to watch.

Football wouldn't have been the same without him, such an influence on the game.

Gave up a total of 7 points in the 3 playoff games.  0-0-7.  Probably will never happen again
I remember watching that 85 Bears team because I was a Bears fan back in the day. That Super Bowl was so much fun for me as a kid.. Richard Dent and Singletary were my favorite on defense. The sad part of it all for me, was being so young at the time, I really had no grasp or realization of the greatness I was really witnessing. I sure do now though.. Pure legend.. RIP

Real classy guy...

Great defensive coach, but I always thought he was a jerk.

Still, his players and family loved him and he made his mark on the NFL.

RIP

Agreed.  The guy was a complete jerk.  Great defensive mind.  Can't take that away from him.  But, jerk, nonetheless.  RIP, but bring the sun screen just in case.
