Quote:rollerjag, Wow! Alexa (alexi) whatever here name is, is amazing. I bought the fire box and am very impressed. The voice remote works better than expected. I tell it to go to PlayStation Vue app, it take me there. I ask it the weather it gives it to me. I ask it to play a song it plays it. I ask it a math problem to see if it gives the answe, it gives it. ...and it does it INSTANTLY!!! Idk if that's a testament to its speed or my internet or both, but very impressed. Thanks for the advice. Plus with the box the remote is a lot more responsive when scrolling through menus and such. Great voice recognition as well.

I don't use Siri much but I asked it a question today since I was driving and it totally jacked it up.

I know, it's pretty good. Plus, they often program in some inside jokes. I'm not sure if it will still work, but tell Alexa "Winter is coming."

There is also a Fire TV remote app for tablets and phones that allows you to control the box from a mobile device.

Bumping this thread because I just cut the cord and went with SlingTV. For anyone that uses Sling, I just have one question for those who have had it for a while.

Will Sling let you flip flop between subscription suites throughout the course of the year? I'm thinking about switching to get all the ESPN channels during football season, and switching back to the other suite during the off-season. Also wanting to get HBO during certain times of the year when my favorite show is running.

You don't have to sign a contract for sling do you? I can't see why you wouldn't be able to.
I turned one of my raspberripis into a kodi box.  So the cable is pretty much cut at this point.

I'm not sure about SlingTV, but I do know that Playstation Vue allows you to switch and/or cancel at any time.

EDIT:  I chose Playstation Vue in order to get the NFL Network as well as the Red Zone channel during football season.

Well, I gave cord cutting a try, and its just not for me right now.

First I tried DirecTV NOW. The no DVR and lack of NFL Network was a deal breaker for me. How does the company that has rights to NFL Sunday Ticket not include NFL Network in their streaming package?

I tried Sling. It was a little better, but I simply couldn't handle not having FOX News Channel. It also lacks the weather channel. Also had a lot of buffering issues with it.

I tried PS Vue. It was decent as well, but was lacking Viacom channels, in particular, Nick Jr. for the kids, so that was a deal breaker.

None of the services had local channels, so I had to stream those through separate apps. I am too lazy to jump back and forth between services, and if I Frankenstein what I actually want, it ends up being more than cable/satellite anyway. Not to mention what appears to be a 30-45 second lag on live sports. I just can't have that.

I will try again in a couple years.
I haven't cut the cord forbtwo reasons. 1: I got my internet through the cable, 2: my cable company isn't crap.
I cancelled DirecTV in February. I do miss the NFL Network, SEC Network, and ESPN for football games, but it's not worth the $55 per month I was paying. I have Amazon Prime and Netflix for entertainment, and about 50 channels over the air.

FBT was right. If you call to cancel and really mean it you will get a much better deal. That's part of the reason I was only paying $55 per month.

I wonder if they'll ever come to remove the dish from my roof?
I love the cord. Screw satellite and their blackouts when someone farts.

I'm not sure what you can get in your area but with SlingTV I can get all of that and for less than $55 a month.

As for your dish from your roof probably not.  I bought a house and moved in over 2 months ago.  The previous owners had Dish and it's still here on the pole with no known attempts to get it back.

Well I "cut the cord" a while back and have never looked back.  My solution for you though would cost the same amount that you were paying.  I use Playstation Vue (Core Package) for $44.99 per month which includes the channels you listed along with a few other sports channels and several "cable" channels (no Home Shopping Network or Spanish channels).  For an extra $10 per month I added the "sports package" which includes the NFL Redzone channel which I love.  However, that puts you right back at $55 per month.

The nice thing about this setup though is that there is no contract so I can cancel at any time.  I can also use the app on several devices including my Amazon Fire TV box, phones, tablets, computers, etc.  I can also log in when I'm away from home and watch online (most channels).  As an example, at times while at work I'll log in and turn on ESPN while I'm at my desk.

As far as removing the dish from your roof... it ain't gonna happen.  In the past I had both Dish Network and DirecTV and the mounts for both dishes are still on my roof.  I removed the actual dishes myself and "recycled" them on trash day.  I didn't want to remove the mounts because I didn't want to risk causing a leak.
My neighbor cut the cord when he discovered it running from his house to mine.

My mom finally cut the cord when I was able to crawl away. Enough was enough.
Just discovered a sports only streaming service called FuboTV which claims to have pretty much any and every sporting event with cloud DVR functionality. It's more than I'm willing to pay, but someone who is into American as well as European sporting events might find it to be a great value at $39.99 per month. Looks like it has all the major network sports as well as NFL Network and Redzone. It looks like it airs all the soccer league matches live from the Americas and Europe as well. The only thing I'm into sports wise (NFL mostly) I can get on the major networks for free and Amazon prime will start airing Thursday night football soon, so FuboTV isn't really for me.

Unless your cable company offers you a sweetheart deal like Comcast did for me twice in the last two years, there's no reason not to cut the cord anymore. You can get pretty much everything they offer cheaper than their advertised prices through streaming services. The only drawback is not having a master guide for everything but several of these apps have guides now for the live channels they offer so it's getting there.

I know, right? Bad rj.
Our Xfinity package 2 years ago was $265/month with all of the bells and whistles for 6 TVs, internet, and phone (I also got a $500 rebate card). Anyway, it's up to $330 now so it's time to cancel, go to DirectTV and repeat the 2-year switch (unless Xfinity matches the original offer and upgrade my internet from 105 (which used to be top of the line) to 150 (the new top of the line).

We do intend to cut the cord within a few years (when all kids are off to college) but for now having all the TV perks is a big part of our enjoyment & relaxation after stressful negotiations throughout the workdays.
I honestly don't know what the appeal is to cutting the cord. Cost would be the biggest benefit, I'm sure, but then don't you sacrifice variety and convenience?
My impression of someone's programming who doesn't subscribe to services is of mostly just TV shows. If you want to watch some other type of programming then you have to access some other gadget or dark place on the internet to download or stream it. It's cheaper, but it also seems constraining and troublesome. How wrong am I?

It really all depends on your level of watching.  I watch mostly sports.

I cut the cord roughly 3 years ago.  I used my Roku box to stream Netflix and got by with that for a while. Then I found SlingTV and I have been very happy with that.  I get to watch most of the Chicago Cubs games with the channels it provides.  I get NFL Network and ESPN/ESPN2.  I get FS1 too and watch some sports there.  They now offer a cloud recording service that I've used. It has AMC so I can watching The Walking Dead and FX so I can watch American Horror Story.  That is about the extent of my TV watching so it works for me.

All for less than half or probably a third of what I would pay for cable/dish.
