We have a pretty crowed defensive roster now. I am looking at the numbers, and it it sure seems like there are going to be some tough cuts. We got 39 players- need to get it down to 25. Roster:

DEFENSIVE LINE:

Fowler

Ngakoue

Holmes

C. Smith

Q. Smith

Davis

Miller

Jones

Ash

Jackson

Marks

Bennett

Day

Odrick

Alualu

Woodward

LINEBACKERS:

Skuta

Jack

T. Smith

Pullard

Porter

Posluszny

Tripp

Armbrister

Bartu

DEFENSIVEBACKS:

House

Ramsey

Amukamara

Colvin

Gratz

McCray

Marshall

Thompson

Gipson

Sample

Cyprien

Evans

Wolff

Loston

This is how I would get us down to 25. Red are cuts, blue are practice squad (barring their availability) I would say that maybe McCray sticks around through the first 4 games until Colvin comes back.

Thoughts?

This will be the first year where Dave will have to make some hard cuts. Wonder if Dave will get creative to keep some of the fringe players by putting them on the PUP or IR.

For instance, if Dave doesn't want to give up on Mike Bennett yet, it would not surprise me to see him IRed with a hangnail.

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Upon further review, might be heavy on LBers. Maybe only keep five.

That is 10 on the Dline. Perhaps they keep Bennett in the fray considering they want to do a lot of rotating on the Dling, and perhaps Pullard sees his way to the practice squad.

Pretty sure we don't have Bartu anymore. Also I know Sean Porter, I'd be surprised if he didn't make the practice squad based on what he was thinking. I'd also be surprised if we got rid of Gratz or McCray this year, they're decent depth. Interesting to see how deep were getting though, I'm loving it.
We need to cut an extra player to make room for Cap Capi.

Turns out he plays for the Ravens now.

Bartu is still here. If I had to pick 25 this is probably what mine would be:

LEO - D.Fowler, Y.Ngakoue, R.Davis

DT - M..Jackson, R.Miller, S.Marks, S.Day, M.Bennett

DE - J.Odrik, T.Alualu

LB - P.Poz, T.Smith, M.Jack, J.Tripp

LOTTO - D.Skuta, T.Holmes

FS - T.Gipson, J.Evans

SS - J.Cyprien, J.Sample

CB - J.Ramsey, D.House, P.Amukamara, A.Colvin, N.Marshall

J.Woodrow goes to the PS.

Dave mentioned Sheldon Day playing 3T and may some nose, which is why I cut Jones. I think Gus likes Marshall as a STer/project so Gratz and McCray are gone barring an injury.

I think the team really like Abry Jones. Not sure he is going anywhere.

No way Evans is cut over Wolff. I thought Evans was solid at time last season.

I actually like Evans more than most, but I think Wolff has way more upside than Evans.

True, but with Evans knowing the System alot more and having starting experience would be tough not to keep.
Marshall might see time at FS.
It's a toss up for me between Tripp and Armbrister.

I think Peyton Thompson is being underrated. Didn't he see time at Corner and Safety last year?

Abry Jones is absolutely making the team. He's the only guy that can reliably backup Miller.
Don't cut Alualu, he did ok last year when he stepped in.

To my understanding any player that played over 6 games is not eligible for the Practice Squad, taking Michael Bennett out of it (13 games played).  I could be wrong but that is how it was explained to me.  The same is true for Safety Craig Loston whom played 6 games last year and was waived in the past.. so he should be a guy possibly in the Red...

Here would be my list for the Defensive LIne players.

DEFENSIVE LINE:

Malik Jackson
(Starting DT with Marks but could play DE highest paid Defensive player on team)
Sen'Derrick Marks
(if healthy starter at DT only)

Jared Odrick
(might start at RE had 5.5 sacks while being moved around a lot with little help)
Dante Fowler Jr
(might play at LE)

Ryan Davis
(Rotational guy at DL, signed 2nd round tender recently)

Yannick Ngakoue (backup Leo for passing situations)

Roy Miller (NT and backup DT)

Sheldon Day (odds are good for Day)

Tyrone Holmes (will be backup SOLB to Myles Jack, and bottom of DE depth)

Chris Smith (not elibigle for PS-too many games played had 3 sacks last year backup at LE I suppose)

DT Michael Bennett (In his 2nd year he has real competition this year to make the roster)

More threatened than others:

Arby Jones
(one year contract on March 8)
Tyson Alualu
(in his last year of a 2 year contract)

Practice Squad guys (Safe for PS, less than 6 games played):

DT Richard Ash
(was waived & then was PS for 15 games last year, not sure how much longer he is allowed on PS)
Quanterus Smith
(Signed for PS on 11/15, could be let go though)
Jonathan Woodard
(could make the DL roster, but if not will go to PS as a rookie)

This font & Color represents Core Players whom have very little fear of being cut, IMO

This font & color represents players most likely to be let go if they don't prove why they shouldn't this offseason, IMO

Quote:Don't cut Alualu, he did ok last year when he stepped in.

I don't think it is really fair of us as fans to say this or that guy will be cut when they haven't even played a single PreSeason game yet.

Tyson Alualu is a really nice guy & father to his family.  He is in his 7th year in the NFL, and I'm sure if he was let go another team would probably sign him as a depth guy as well.

I am not sure if he will make it this year or not... but to say he has nothing to worry about would simply be a lie.

This would leave 3 Gene Smith players. Ryan Davis, Paz, and Chad Henne
Arby Jones is going to make the team.
Quote:Arby Jones is going to make the team.

I think so too. He provides good depth at NT behind Miller.

LEO - Fowler, Yannick, Davis(can play all over the d-line), Holmes(can also play OTTO)

DT - Jackson, Marks, Day

NT - Miller, Jones

RE - Odrick

Because Davis and Holmes have versatility at multiple positions, and maybe Day too, I think that saves space for one more spot : Alualu vs Bennett. Alualu is more versatile, but Bennett is probably the stronger player overall. Alualu would provide depth at RE behind Odrick, whereas Bennett probably couldnt play at RE. I think Day could play at RE also. Woodard should probably be practice squad.

Should be interesting how they use these roster spots to keep the best players. Gonna have to be creative.

Just based on what we saw last year, it is Tripp and it is not close.
