Quote:Between free housing, food, apparel, education, etc..... college players are pretty well compensated. It's not like these kids have to work day jobs to get by in college. Everything is paid for.

They get to eat out of the cafeteria and they get some free clothes with their colleges name on it. They don't get to do anything off the campus. They can't afford to go see any bands or musiciansmusicians. They don't have enough money to go to the movies or take a girl on a proper date.

Guess what, when my son went to college, that wasn't paid for because he could throw a beautiful spiral, he couldn't afford those things either....unless we paid for those things for him. Welcome to the world of the poor college student.
So the coleges that are operating at a deficit (surprise!  Most of them!) are supposed to dip into what magical budget and pull out more money?

It's so easy to say that these teams bring in so much money, they should get paid.

I don't know about colleges, but only 10-15 athletic departments are self-sustaining. People who say the players should be paid have no understanding of all the issues at play. One is the issues is sexism. If you just pay the football players, you know the feminists and media will go nuts. A lawsuit is a certainty. The university will have to pay everyone to avoid that. Then you have the subsidies. Are people comfortable with colleges paying players with their tax dollars? I could go.
Thank you maheo30.  A simple google search will show that most college athletic programs are operating at a deficit.

I tried Lycos and Ask Jeeves, the only thing that came up was an advertisement for Dr. Kevin Hornsby.

Excellent post and I agree with most of it. Wish i had more time to engage in the conversation. Will try later..

Ask Jeeves still exists?

Yeah. You have to use Netscape to access it though.

How much money is your kid bringing into the school? Is it anywhere close to what the football team/players do?
Anyone catch Spurrier's jab at Ole Miss when a reporter asked him about any potential interest in being a "ncaa football commissioner.

I could go on.

Unless Michigan is entirely different than every other program in the country (I doubt it), then this is demonstrably false.

You do know that upper classmen tend to live off campus and get their room and board paid for, right?

And you do know these guys have a social life and go out to the clubs on weekends, right?

I'm not sure where you get your info from, but I can say from first hand experience that you are mistaken. It's not that they are being paid right now, it's that they don't have to pay for anything and their allowance for things like Room and Board covers "cost of living" type things.

And they are "paid" with an education, room and board and meals. If you also pay them money, then they go from students to being paid athletes and the highest payer wins. Just because most kids don't take advantage of that free education, doesn't mean it doesn't have value.

I'll take that as a no then

.

But yes, they are paid in the form of a football scholarship, that is correct.

Our country has been built on being paid for the talents you possess, or the work you're willing to do. College athletes, football, basketball mainly, are not being compensated whatsoever for the amount of money that they are making for their school. The system that was built on the backs of these kids is broke. You have a few at the top raking in money off the backs of these kids. It is time to compensate them more for their talent and what they bring to their school. A large majority of these athletes wouldn't be given scholarships by the schools they attended if they were not athletes. They are brought in for a reason.

You tell me where they get the money to go to clubs.

Come on man. Do you actually think they're paying to get in? Or paying to get drinks?

No one is forcing these kids to join a team, are they? The only reason they want to play college ball is because they all think they're good enough to go on to the next level...pro ball. Sad fact of life is, most are not. So get rid of college to the pros and have minor league teams like they do with baseball. Then they can get paid a salary and we won't have to hear about how awful these poor modern day slaves are being treated for only getting food, shelter and an education worth tens of thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the school.

Please excuse me while I go wipe away the tear forming in my eye as I think about these poor downtrodden souls. Forget the starving children in Africa...think of the athletes!!! Rolleyes
Exactly Bch.  You either get a scholarship for a free education, or you get it for the hope of playing in the NFL.  If you're smart you will use that free education, room, and board to set you up for life.  They are using each other.

If someone is willing to come up with a better model and initiate it, go for it.  To tell the NCAA what they need to do based only on a handful of athletic programs actually turning a profit, is a bit unfair.

I guarantee with the whole Title IX that if you pay the men you are going to have to pay the women.  There's no way around it.  Unless you want your favorite college teams to increase price for tickets and merchandise, there will be no change.
