Who would you take if we can get a trade back and Tunsil, Ramsey, Jack and Bosa are off the board?

If other who?

Lawson, Darron Lee, or Eli Apple. All great system fits.
Apple

Mckensie

Floyd

Lawson
Lawson, VH3, Alexander, Apple, maybe Spence depending on how far back we go.
I meant to put cant get a trade back
If we can't trade back then you take the BAP which is widely considered to be Buckner, regardless of the need.
I'd kick my dog if this scenario happened.

Before anyone gets upset with my comment, just know I was joking... I don't own a dog, I own a cat.
If Spence really interviewed well and there's no concerns, I'd honestly consider him.  He's one of the best edge rushers in the draft.  If not, then hard to say.

Wentz.

Then shop him for a trade back. What we should have done with Roethlisberger.

So you'd kick your cat.
Pretty much the most realistic worst case scenario as I'm not enamored with any of the remaining players. Buckner is the best available player, but Lawson makes the most sense for us.

...having a bi-polar moment.  Chose Lawson for the edge rusher need, but now thinking I should have chose Hargreaves.  Prince is here on a year only deal, and has issues being able to stay healthy and available.

I still want to know when these things (taking a 1st round QB in back to back years and taking a QB in the first round specifically to trade him, especially when you have a still young franchise QB on your roster) ever happens.

Answer: pretty much only on message boards.

The Colts took Schlichter in 1982 then Elway in 1983 in back to back years.  The Colts wound up missing on Schlichter (well documented gambling issues) and trading Elway (seen as a vastly superior prospect to Schlichter) because he refused to play for them.

Quote:

"In exchange for Elway, the Colts received Chris Hinton, the offensive guard from Northwestern who was the Broncos' first pick in the draft and the fourth player taken over all; Mark Herrmann, a quarterback from Purdue who has played three seasons with the Broncos; and the Broncos' first-round draft choice in 1984."

Dallas took Aikman in 1989, then drafted Steve Walsh the Supplemental draft in the same year, costing Dallas their first round pick in 1990, but at the time, Jimmy Johnson didn't know whether Aikman or Walsh would end up being the QB.  They wound up trading Walsh a year later giving up the number one overall pick in 1990 for a mid 1and a mid 3 in 1991, and a mid 2 in 1992.  Not only does that not return fair value for the #1 overall pick either on the front end or the back end, but whatever value they DID recoup wasn't fully realized until 1992.

So we're talking twice within the last 34 years the first condition (QBs in back to back first rounds by the same team)  has happened, none of whom were drafted with the express purpose of trading them.  None of them were taken with an already established young franchise QB on the roster.  One guy was traded because he absolutely refused to play for the team that drafted him, the other guy was traded because he lost out in the competition.  Neither team  got in return what the pick was worth.

Think about it.

If you are sitting there with the #1 overall pick and there is a franchise QB prospect deemed worthy of the pick, who would settle for a mid 1, a mid 2, and a mid 3 to be fully realized two seasons after you pick him, or the #4 overall pick, an average veteran QB, and a first rounder the next year?!?

For the #2 overall pick back in 2012, the Rams got a boatload of picks and got some immediate return for them.  Specifically...

Quote:

In the deal, the Rams will receive the Redskins' No. 6 overall pick this year, as well as the Redskins' first-round picks in 2013 and 2014. The Rams also will receive Washington's second-round pick this year in return for the second overall pick that the Redskins now will use on whichever quarterback the Indianapolis Colts do not draft No. 1 overall.

So by simply trading the pick in the first place, the Rams got:

2012:  1st round (6th overall) and 2nd Round picks

2013:  1st round

2014:  1st round

With absolutely zero risk of being stuck with a QB they neither wanted nor needed.

How would this dynamic (ROI) translate to the #9 overall pick in 2004, or the #5 overall pick this year?

Based on history, we'd get hosed and get nowhere near the return, short or long term, we'd get if we simply traded the pick.

If the guys we want are not on the board at five, trade down.

If we can't trade down, just take the next guy on the board.  Don't get cute and try to extort a truckload of picks by taking a QB everyone knows you don't need and preclude yourself from filling an immediate need.

If a team really wants the QB, they will give us what we want without us having to take him.

Quote:Wentz.

Then shop him for a trade back. What we should have done with Roethlisberger.

Teams would likely lowball us as they'd be well aware that we have to trade him or we essentially wasted a top five pick.

You wanna get technical, at that point BAP is Wentz

Colts 1983 drafted Elway when they had just drafted a QB high the previous year. While they didn't get full value in the trade because of Irsay's meddling, they did get the best OT in that draft plus a 1984 1st round pick.

Chargers in 2004 (the very same year we should have drafted Roethlisberger) drafted Eli Manning who publicly stated that he would not play for the Chargers, and got good value in the trade down. They still had Drew Brees on the roster too, although Brees had disappointed up to that point.

Maybe you can point to a case where that strategy has failed.

I had a dream last night that we traded back to 14 and drafted Keanu Neal.

Sad

I'm kind of liking going after Floyd by moving back if the top choices aren't there. There's something about this kid that I'm starting to really like....

GO JAGS!!

I would love to have him. Obviously not at 14, though.
