The scheme would work find if we actually had a LEO and an OTTO. Hopefully Fowler will work out at one of these spots, but the scheme really calls for at least two LEOs and an OTTO.

To paraphrase: "The answer 2 is fine if we actually had asked him what 1+1 is, hopefully next year we can ask him what 1+1 is, because the answer 2 really needs a question like that."

To say the scheme works is true, much in the same way it's true to say that 2 is the answer to some math questions, but the true test of a coach is does he find the answer by doing the math, or does he just keep giving the same answer no matter the question and hoping he was asked the question that aligns with that answer.

The great coaches find the answers, the good coaches know a lot of the answers to a lot of questions already, and the Gus's of the world heard an answer somewhere and think it's the only answer that there is.
I agree with Jeremy 100%, If I never hear the terms LEO and OTTO again, I'd be happy. I like ILB, OLB, DE and even Will, Mike and Sam (wait, Michael Sam? No, that's another thread).

The only way I would be happy is if we got 2 players actually named Leo and Otto and put them in the positions.

Leon and the Otters would be a great funk band.
Quote:No, the scheme isn't working, because Gus is a typical football coach, he thinks he already has the answer before he finds out what the question is.

I think of a scheme as the answer to the question "What are the things my defensive personnel can do well." Gus doesn't ask the question, he just gives the answer.

In Gus's world 1+1 = 2, but so does 1324325+254235623. Everything equals two in his world, and if it turns out that 1324325+254235623=255559948 then in Gus's world the real problem is that we didn't ask him what 1+1 is, not that he didn't bother to do any thinking about what the problem is.

I will say that Gus isn't particularly alone in his failings, most coaches seem to have his problem, they really really need a great GM that can find guys that will make his question be 1+1, but that really doesn't dismiss Gus's failings, it simply means he's in good company in them.
'Even a broken clock is right twice a day'.

Seriously, we all pretty much realize that the defensive 'scheme' Gus has instituted here isn't, in itself, the problem. The core issue is that we've lacked the base talent (aka- gifted pass rushers) to be able to make this type defense effective. 'Leo'... 'otto'... just different names for basic positions and not worthy of any of us getting our collective panties in a bind over.

In football, as in many other team sports, it boils down to individual match-ups of one player against another. The team that realizes the greatest number of victories in those individual match-ups is invariably the winner of the game. Regrettably, we've not had the talent on our defense for some time to consistently effect the outcome of a game in our favor. That weakness, and a few other factors like missing field goals and extra point attempts, has proven to be our demise more often than not. Even with Fowler starting this season, we don't yet know if he will prove to be the dominate player he was in college. Certainly, we hope so, but even if he is, he is only one. We still have a ways to go to either fix this defense or to change the defense to something different.
Quote:Rushing the passer isn't a scheme its a skill.

You either possess that ability or you don't.

Sure you can "scheme" a few extra rushes that catch the other team off guard, but don't kid yourself. You are facing highly skilled and experienced professionals. They see a scheme they counter it. The bottom line is that you need players that can execute the fundamentals regardless of scheme. We don't have those players.

That is why we struggle rushing the passer.

Did the Bears have more talented pass rushers than we did? Their team finished 20th in scoring defense. The Jags finished 31st.

A good coach will fit the scheme to whatever talent he has in order to maximize results. A bad coach will just stick with the same scheme and implementation no matter what players he has. Guess what type of coach we have?

EVERYONE DID!!

Including several CFL teams, most major colleges, a Division III school or two and Raines.

The bears had 3 people with more sacks than anyone on the jags.

A CB doesn't get the second most sacks on the team without some serious scheming. The problem was the guys who are supposed to be able to win one on one battles and get after the QB weren't good enough.

All the jags coaches were left with was just scheme, and in professional sports like the NFL, you can only out scheme for so long before the highly skilled and experienced professionals you are facing begin figuring it out.
I think Otto will work with Myles Jack and Leo with Dante Fowler!
When I see all the players we have added, coupled with Babich leaving,Kiffin helping out along with the draft still to be done I'm pretty confident in our defense for next year.

After last years [BLEEP] show ,even a slightly below average unit will be refreshing to see.
I thought this thread was bumped from years ago.

Turns out, it was just are boy catching up to current events.

Bradley can call them whatever cute names he wants, but none of it means squat until they actually deliver.  Until then "Leo" and "Otto" may as well be a "DPR" and a unicorn, just fantasy talk.

Quote:OTTO, LEO... i'm tired of it.

You just need to rush the passer. But we also need to cover TEs.

People seems to think that Malik, Gipson, Dante (who has done absolutly nothing in the NFL for now) could be the answers.

Our problems last year was also the lack of coverage from our LBs. Miscommunication, lack of talent, bad scheme...I don't know what was the problem, but you need to fix this too.

This defense was a mess last year. I like our free agents (Malik, Gipson, Prince) but adding big names is just the start of the rebuilding process.

TE really? 6 games are decided in our division out the gate. During those 6. luck, marriota, osweiler.

TE coverage is the least of our problems if cant rush the passer. Jack and Ramsey wont help that.

So 5 if stay put has to be a pass rusher. Anything else makes no sense. And willing to be at least twice in draft will be looking at paas rushers.
