Quote:I think it's a good move to take a QB. Sit him on the bench and the difference in wins and losses won't matter much.

Even if we get Bosa he's not the difference in 10-6 and 8-8. He's not on a Kearse level. Period.

8-8 the staff sticks around anyways... And we will have a lot less holes to fill. So it's not suicide to draft another QB.

Look at what the Pats got out of Mallett. What could the packers have got out of Rodgers if they wanted to trade him?

Who knows but the Chargers did it with Rivers. They could've kept Brees and traded Rivers.

I think you're overboard about having to have another body on D. A ROOKIE is NOT going to have that big of impact. Especially with THIS team under a first year DC. Just being realistic.

They spent a 3rd round selection, got absolutely nothing out of him on the field, then traded him for a 7th round (243 overall) draft pick.

There's no way we'd recoup the value if we draft a QB at #5.  We don't compare with the Packers of that time since we aren't looking for our next QB, and Brees was hardly a lock to be a great player at the time SD drafted Rivers, so it made sense for them to go after Rivers.

Either way a rookie isn't going to make a difference in wins for this team.

Ok but who helps make the team better? A QB who rides the bench or Jack/Bosa/Ramsey.....

Your theory makes absolutely no sense for a top 5 pick. We need playmakers on defense and honestly, one of those 3 guys could help us get more wins. A back up top 5 QB does absolutely nothing.
you guys really giving thought to draft a qb?

we have reached peak draft scenario discussions its time to just lock it down.
Selecting a QB makes 0 sense...

If Bosa/Ramsey/Tunsil/Jack are all gone, I would go for VH (trade down if possible). He would have the most immediate impact on our D, which is exactly what we should be looking for. That would give us House, Prince, Colvin, and VH. That's a pretty solid CB group.

You don't pick a QB. You trade down with a team that wants a QB in that situation.

I'd be happy with Buckner. VH3 would be a reach and I wouldn't be too upset with trading down and taking him or Apple.

Historically, a QB shouldn't be available at 5. 2013 is the only draft in the past 10 years at least that a QB didn't go top 3, and that was a draft which had EJ Manuel as the top ranked QB. There are at least 3 QBs who are better prospects than EJ was in this draft so I would say tradition will hold true and a QB will be picked in the top 3.
Was contemplating the possibility of swapping picks with the Rams and them giving us their two 2nd rounders. This gives us some ammo to move back into the 1st or trade for a pass rusher.

Only problem is I don't really see anyone who fits at #15. Spence? Probably too high. Alexander? Apple?

That's an interesting scenario.

A Floyd/Spence/Dodd type pass rusher could be available at 15. May be a reach though.

Then with 3 2nd rounders, that can net us a starting guard, LB, and CB.

I suppose they could just as easily trade with the Cowboys or Ravens if they really want a QB bad. Depends on a lot of things but it is an option.

It could look something like.

R1#15=Eli Apple CB

R2#38=Shilque Calhoun LB

R2#43=Ryan Kelly C/ Joshua Garnett G

R2#45=Yannick Ngoue LB

Easy now!!!! Never did I say we would/should take a QB over Jack, Ramsey, Bosa.

The point was IF we get shafted by other teams and Tunsil, Jack, Bosa, and Ramsey goes who do we take?

At that point there's nobody that's a difference maker on D there worthy of the pick. Spence? I'd rather take Nkemdiche. Spence has less talent and just as much baggage.

I don't want a QB but I would do it and try to get a big value trade during the draft. Or even a year later. Remember we have more than 1 pick in this draft.

Oh the draft police are moving in...

If you don't want to read, perhaps just log off? No?

Trading back is the best scenario given the OP but if we would get no fair offers I wouldn't hesitate taking BPA. I do think the Rams would trade up with us for 5 Overall if both QBs are there.

I know this is going to be hard to swallow, but : We're not going to win the Super Bowl this year.

Those QBs aren't even best available. They're value is way overvalued due to their position. Wentz and Goff are no where near the top QBs selected over the last few years.

No one is going to want to trade for these QBs. If we draft one, it's a wasted pick and we won't be guaranteed to trade one for more picks. A QB shouldn't even be a thought for Caldwell until the 6th round.

This is absolutely asinine. Get off the message board Gene.
Best available Jack,Otto,or Leo on our board. Which seems as if it would VH3 now that Lawson is being checked out. Wouldn't rule out Jaylon Smith just yet,we could bring him in for a visit and have the doctors get their own opinion on his knee. I'm rooting for that guy, maybe not at #5 but I hope someone will give him a chance.
If the draft plays out this way I think that a QB needy team might want to try to trade up to 5.  Broncos maybe?  They do have pass rushers...
Quote:Phillip Rivers was drafted by the Chargers even though they had Drew Brees.

Boy don't they hate that.
At the time Rivers was selected, SD had a new GM and a new coach from when Brees was chosen in 2001.  Brees, a 2nd round pick, was hardly viewed as an ascending QB at that time.

By 2004, a new coach and new GM looking at Brees career from 2001-the day before the draft in 2004 could easily question whether Brees was a franchise QB and view the position as a need.

That's entirely different from our situation where we have a young, clearly ascending QB chosen in the top 3, same GM, same head coach.

You have to move the pick.
Probably think about getting Shaq Lawson.  I think if we can get him around 255-260 he'll be much quicker and be a pretty good pass rusher.  He's super agile for his weight and has a great motor.
