Well it is the dead time and stupid threads do come up.

Tank a game?  It doesn't happen except in the fantasy football and madden NFL world.

Quote:I would have no respect for any team that would consider losing a game to improve its draft position. Lets completely remove any integrity from the game and watch the three or four bottom feeders throwing games to improve their draft position over the others!

I'm sure teams will take this into consideration as they are jockeying for the 1st pick in the NFL Draft.   Having the respect of dennisp3 is much greater than having the rights to select Shaquille O'Neal.
Tank?....Heck no, Jags don't tank.....they may screw up and lose a game because of mistakes.

Can you imagine telling last years group to do that?  Wallbash

But they never, ever tank.

We've drafted in the top 10 for 10 years and the Patriots have drafted in the bottom 10 for 10 years. Nobody can convince me draft position is paramount over drafting well.

Very true.  If you draft near the top and are doing your job well, you will be drafting near the bottom soon enough.

Having Tom Brady is the difference, not the other players they draft. The Colts got Luck, they'll be in a similar situation as long as he's there.

Sure glad that didn't happen

The Redskins wouldn't have had the first pick. The clots would have just traded up with the Rams.

Payton Manning and John Elway say hi !!

While you can find good QBs at the bottom of the draft or later rounds, your odds go up when drafting #1.

Heck, the Colts hit rock bottom, draft Luck then won a playoff game the following year and made it to the AFC Championship game the following year.

We love to live in the memories of the 1999 season and the Colts were able to do that in 2 years following Manning's departure due to drafting #1.   Did they tank ---- Absolutely !!

Rams were asking too much.  The Skins are much more aggressive than the Colts.

They would have only had to move up one spot. Rams may have valued still having their pick of prospects.
Quote:Won't the clots just franchise him if he doesn't sign an extension.

Yes.  There is 0 chance that Andrew Luck won't be playing in Indianapolis for the next 3 years.  They will be able to franchise him for two years after next year and they will do it if they have to.

To think that Elway isn't eager to sign a quarterback this offseason because he is going to get Andrew Luck next year is laughable.

How many games are acceptable to lose intentionally?

Why not just trade up for a "once in a decade player" in those rare instances and win games instead?

I'll take the wins over draft position.

Because not everyone who is in position to take a once in a decade player is willing to trade down no matter how much you offer them.

In 1983, San Diego offered the Colts THREE (3) first round picks in the draft deemed to be the best all time in the effort to obtain John Elway.

Baltimore said no.

Eventually, post draft, Elway forced the Colts' hand by refusing to sign with them and threatening to play baseball.

But it doesn't change the fact that a team in position to take a great player at the most important position didn't trade down.

Well, drafting well is part of it.. Having the best overall coaching staff and training program that stays consistent with their approach to development is probably much more important.
To clarify, The patriots are who they are because of the development process and of course having Brady is huge.

It takes both.  I think talented players outweigh a top-of-the-league staff, but that's just me.

I think the Gus Bradley's and Greg Olson's  of the world are gonna get more out of Blake Bortles and Allen Robinson than Belichick is gonna' get out of Blaine Gabbert and Jarrett Dillard.

Give me the talented players. The good one's can outlast a bad coaching staff.

Barring injury, there is 0 chance Luck won't be playing in Indy the next 3 years.
Quote:Are you kidding? That game gave us a glimpse of the future.  At this point, I don't think the Colts are as good as we are. Their drafting and free agent picks have been horrible, and it has nothing to do with their draft position. Look at Denver or Pittsburgh, who always win, and always draft well.

Besides, I'm tired of playing for high draft picks. I want to see progress.

The Jaguars should have swept the Colts last season, still not sure why they didn't seal that game up... oh well.. this season is the year of the Jaguar!
