They could however highly doubt they will. And plan on signing Mario.

They need sooo much help and by restructuring Suh they are in a bind the next couple of years

Would 20m cap be enough to cover Mario and Vernon? And even if it does, that's it, they're done.
03-06-2016, 07:54 AM
With Delmas, Lamar Miller, Vernon and Rishard Matthews FA.
If they want Mario Williams, Vernon and Lamar back...then 20 millions is not enough.

If they really wanted to keep Vernon they should have given him the franchise tag and restructure these deals earlier. It was obvious that with a transition tag they would have ended up paying at least as much as the franchise tag because of other teams offers.
Now they may have the money to keep him and then what? They keep pushing Suh's cap back and if they add Vernon as well they'll be a team that's not close to winning anyway but in a much worse cap space hell (if possible) over the next years. I just don't understand them.

I think we can still get him. Maybe they can match, but a front-loaded contract for a team with 90 million in cap space looks a lot different than that same front loaded contract to a team with 20 million in cap space. If they have any brains at all, they'll let him go.

I doubt they will match any big offer towards him. He's a solid pass rusher but will probably be paid almost like JJ Watt, which he isn't.

The Jags could still structure the deal to the point where Miami couldn't sign Vernon.

I have to wonder if Olivier Vernon is worth more than 13 Mil/Yr.
I just don't see him as a pass rusher that creates his own sacks.
I get that he creates lots of pressure and maybe that is enough.
Yet I still am not sure that Vernon is an elite Pass Rusher and thus worthy of the kind of contract we are discussing here.
Maybe it would be better to sign Ayers and Hali for the same money per year but not for the same length of contract.
Just a thought.

No premium free agent is going to be worth the money they get. They are always overpaid.
Robert Ayers is 30. Tamba Hali is 32. Vernon is 25.

Vernon isn't the top of my wish list anymore, after seeing several really solid pieces on twitter where they charted his sacks and showed how many were simply cleaning up the mess caused by Suh and Wake (and Odrick from previous years). We all figured part of his production was from that, but it was eye opening to see just how much.
I would much rather get JPP to be the alpha pass rusher, or simply go after Malik Jackson of course. Both should be a bit cheaper, too. Either of them, plus assuming the Irvin hype is real, would be a gigantic pass rush improvement with Fowler and Marks coming back on top of that.

Let's be honest, if we get Ayers, Vernon, Jackson or JPP we'll all be happy as it's an upgrade on what we already have.

His number of QB hurries is also middle of the pack. (only three more than Clemons, two more than Branch)
I still think he'd be pretty good (better than those numbers suggest) playing 40% of the snaps at LEO, but is that worth 14-15 million per year? Hmmmmmm.

Really, Ayers? Ok then.

The guy led the league in pressures the last 7 weeks of the season, but he also played next to some great players and he cost his team dearly at times with dumb penalties for "dirty hits". Is he turning into a good pass rusher, or was the last 7 weeks his effort to get paid? When I factor in the whole thing, I don't think he's worth spending tens of millions of dollars on to find out. He's a good player, but he's not as good as he's going to get paid for, and he's most likely not going to be game changing defender either. I don't see the reward being worth the risk of him turning out to be another FA bust here.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Ayers registered 9.5 sacks in 12 games, that might not be GOAT stats but it's an upgrade on what we have. Sure he's not the ideal pick, the premier rusher we crave, but if he's all we can get I'd be happy.

All this said, Ryan O sure is adamant that they are going to make a huge offer to him as soon as legal tampering opens up tomorrow...so we'll see.
03-06-2016, 10:47 AM
Is his transaction tag already counted towards that 20 mil in free space, or does it kick in 1st day of free agency, so essentially they would have less than 10.

Meh....
Quote:Dolphins may not go above $12.7M for Vernon
Olivier Vernon | MIA
(March 6, 2016 11:03 AM EST)
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald said "don't be surprised" if the Dolphins move on from transition player RE Olivier Vernon if he gets an offer above $12.7 million.
The $12.7 million figure is how much Vernon will earn under the transition tag. If another team offers more than that, Jackson believes the Dolphins will try to sign two players for the price of Vernon's $12.7 million salary. Robert Ayers, William Hayes, Jeremy Mincey and Mario Williams, who visited with the Dolphins on Saturday, are all viewed as possible replacements should Vernon land elsewhere.
