Quote:In all seriousness, Gene Smith is arguably the worst GM in the history of all sports. I get into this debate with my friends all the time, they point to guys like Matt Millen etc... Millen wasn't great but at least he selected Megatron and couple of nice offensive linemen, the same can't be said for Gene.
Agreed and it's not even close. The man's best pick was Cecil shorts.
Him and Irvin and I'm happy, add the guard from the chiefs and Malik Jackson=Afc South Champs come at me!!!

I still remember being pissed and I got ripped on this message board when he gave up a 2nd round pick to take the Pats 3rd rounder to draft that corner forget his name, he was decent but always hurt. But just the mindset of getting a mid to late 3rd round pick for what was potentially a high 2nd round pick was absolutely obsurd, man that guy really screwed this team over.

Derek Cox, who IIRC is no longer in the league. Yeah, it's not so much that he picked Cox, it's the fact that he traded away a 2nd round pick that would ultimately be in the 2nd year of a major rebuild.

I believe that second we gave them turned into Rob Gronkowski.

They used the second we gave them along with one of their own picks to move up and draft Gronkowski.
Quote:Would yall rather have Veron(Big $$$) or JPP(Not as big $$$)?
Vernon people are using his very impressive pressure numbers (79 on the season, 3rd in entire NFL and 2nd among DE) as a reason to covet him, and rightfully so. Well, in the 8 games JPP was active he had 41 pressures. I think we can all do the math of what that would extrapolate out to if he played in 16 games.
Either one would be great.

As long as his hand checks out medically and I'm guessing it will, I'd throw some serious money at JPP. I still prefer Vernon to him, but Pierre-Paul is one heck of a consolation prize.
Quote:True. But the waiting period could hurt us if other DE are gone.
I would only consider it if no one else was available.
Seriously? With the cap room we have?
It'd be easier than pie to throw out a deal that Miami can't touch. Even if they sit on him for a while, it's not like there will be any doubt about where he ends up.
Quote:Just have to front load the contract and the dolphins can't match. They tried to transition tag Charles Clay last year and that didn't work so well
One would think that the Dolphins would have learned from the Charles Clay Transition Tag decision.
The most likely outcome is this isn't going to end up well for the Dolphins. Unless they are able to complete a trade with a team that signs him to an offer sheet, they will likely either lose Olivier Vernon or they will match a contract that will give them additional substantial salary cap problems. If I'm in position of the team that potentially signs Vernon to an offer sheet, I would call the Dolphins bluff. Unless they want to trade him for a major discount compensation price, I wouldn't make a trade with them.
Seems to me the Dolphins simply put the transition tag on him to only have to pay him top 10 money this year versus top 5 money. Any team offers Vernon top 5 money in 2016 would seem to have a good chance of landing him. If the Dolphins were willing or able to pay him what he would get with an exclusive or non-exclusive franchise tag, they would have done it.
The Dolphins seem content on letting Vernon walk.

Olivier Vernon | MIA
(March 1, 2016 5:10 PM EST)
The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins haven't made a formal contract offer to transition player RE Olivier Vernon since September.
The Dolphins did little work to keep Vernon, and will now let the open market dictate his price. With pass rushers always at a premium and the Dolphins seemingly unwilling to go beyond $12-$13 million per season, Vernon will likely be playing elsewhere in 2016.

Olivier Vernon | MIA
(March 1, 2016 8:38 PM EST)
The Newark Star-Ledger's Jordan Raanan believes the Giants' first call in free agency will go to transition player RE Olivier Vernon.
Vernon's phone will be blowing up come March 7 when teams are allowed to "legally" begin contacting free agents. Players are allowed to officially sign contracts starting the afternoon of March 9. Vernon is arguably the top player available after he was slapped with merely the transition tag by the Dolphins on Tuesday. He's allowed to negotiate with all 31 other teams, and the Dolphins get nothing but the right to match any offer. The Giants are in desperate need of pass rushers, as are a number of other clubs. The Jaguars should also be in the mix.

Ha, I'm well aware of what it looks like. I meant in terms of him not having to get more skin grafts or continued surgery on the hand.

I think he's only going to get 1 year contracts from here on out.
The question is, do we try to sign both Williams and Vernon?
We need pass rush, Williams may be gone before Miami matches or not. If we sign Williams in the process of waiting for Vernon, does it make sense to pay both? Bc that's the tough spot we're in.

We got enough money to sign both but I honestly don't see Williams coming here.
Vernon is going to get a huge contract from us. One that could make him a top 10 paid defensive player in the league. We will also try to sign JPP or Hayes or another pass rusher. Then we draft Bosa/Jack/Ramsey.
