We will have a better clue what will become of Olivier Vernon.

The deadline for assigning franchise and transition tags is 4pm today, and the Fish are going to wait until today to figure out what to do with Vernon.

Hopefully, they don't tag him.

However, assuming the figures in these two charts are accurate (a generous assumption), they don't currently have the space to put any tag on him, franchise or transition.  At least not without restructuring contracts or cutting players.

The first link details Miami's cap situation, showing the 2016 cap hits for each player, the dead money, and finally culminating in the amount of cap room the Fish have.

According to this link, the Fish have anywhere from $7.4 -8.7 million in cap space prior to any adjustments or terminations of any existing contracts.

This second link-from the Atlanta Journal Constitution- was actually provided by D6 in another thread.  It lists the cap numbers for tagged positions.

According to the AJC, a DE given a transition tag will cost $12,734,000.   The same DE given the franchise tag would cost $15,701,000.

This represents a potential difference of $5.3-8.3 million just to get him there.

If I am understanding these charts correctly, they could save $6.2 million by cutting Dion Jordan.

In other news, as expected, Muhammad Wilkerson was given the franchise tag.

I can't be the only one here who's more concerned with what happens to Eric Berry today than I am Olivier Vernon. I don't think Vernon is worth anywhere near what he's going to cost, but I do think Eric Berry would be worth writing a blank check.

Berry is more likely to re-sign than Vernon is. The Chiefs have plenty of cap space to retain him via long term contract or tag and he reportedly wants to stay in KC as well.

The Fins are pretty much up against the cap. Unless they have plans for restructuring Suh's or Wake's contract by 4 today they won't have the funds available to tag Vernon meaning he'll hit the open market.

Not that I think Berry is a substandard player, but:

1.  As a general rule, pass rush is more important than FS.

2.  As far as this team's offseason priorities go, Caldwell himself has indicated pass rush was going to be the priority for this team.

3.  Miami was reputed to be strapped against the cap due to the Suh contract.  I had heard no such cap issues surrounding the Chiefs, though admittedly I'm no cap guy.
Any chance Doug Whaley hits the snooze bar til 4:01 and forgets to tag Cordy Glenn?

Well he needs to make a move or two as well to free up money for the tag.
It appears the only tag placed on a player so far is the Bears WR Alshon Jeffery.

FA is going to be so much fun.
Dolphins have chosen to transition tag Olivier Vernon.

Blow them out of the water Caldwell!
Wow, you'd think the Fins front four is the equivalent of the Steel Curtain or Fearsome Foursome with the money they're gonna be paying Suh, Wake and Vernon.  The money doesn't match the production.

So basically Jags have to spend a boat load to get him. Fine with me lol. 7.5 sacks and 80 pressures last season!

We would have had to anyway had he become a FA.
Caldwell can easily structure a contract that is frontloaded in the first year that would make it nearly impossible for the Dolphins to match.  Vernon is the epitome of a perfect free agent on the rise and only 26 years old.

Chiefs playing with fire if Berry hits the market, I hope Dave throws a lot of money at him

Von Miller has been franchised.
