We will have a better clue what will become of Olivier Vernon.
The deadline for assigning franchise and transition tags is 4pm today, and the Fish are going to wait until today to figure out what to do with Vernon.
Hopefully, they don't tag him.
However, assuming the figures in these two charts are accurate (a generous assumption), they don't currently have the space to put any tag on him, franchise or transition. At least not without restructuring contracts or cutting players.
The first link details Miami's cap situation, showing the 2016 cap hits for each player, the dead money, and finally culminating in the amount of cap room the Fish have.

According to this link, the Fish have anywhere from $7.4 -8.7 million in cap space prior to any adjustments or terminations of any existing contracts.
This second link-from the Atlanta Journal Constitution- was actually provided by D6 in another thread. It lists the cap numbers for tagged positions.

According to the AJC, a DE given a transition tag will cost $12,734,000. The same DE given the franchise tag would cost $15,701,000.
This represents a potential difference of $5.3-8.3 million just to get him there.
If I am understanding these charts correctly, they could save $6.2 million by cutting Dion Jordan.
In other news, as expected, Muhammad Wilkerson was given the franchise tag.
