First and foremost lets acknowledge how disgusting the Ivory contract is. Seriously thats gotta be one of the worst contracts in the entire league.

And if we drafted Fournette at 4 we would have two top 10 paid running backs.

Hopefully we dont do that.

I'm sure if we draft Fournette at 4 Ivory will be cut.
Let's make it even worse. Sort the RB ranks by guaranteed money and guaranteed money/year since the guaranteed is what really counts. Elliott is #1 by far in both. Fournette would top that.

If we draft him at four, it's because we think he will be one of the top ten RBs in the league. And so worth the money.
If we're gonna burn a first on an RB, let's wait til next year. Saquon Barkley is 10 times better than any RB in this class.

Well, except that next year if we are picking high it's going to be a QB without a doubt.

You think he's gonna go that high next year? I was reading an article that some NFL execs think he's a top 5 pick. Selfishly I want him to fall to us because I'm a big Penn State fan and would love to see him play for the Jags. He's an absolute beast.

I think he'll be top 10 pretty comfortably yeah, and if we're in that range Blake failing yet again is about the only excuse as to why.
Now check out how overpaid OJ Howard would be as a TE.

Yep a top 5 pick at any position is highly paid, even Ramsey and Fowler are top 10 at corner and DE. If you are giving top money are you doing it at the position who has a plethora of active quality producers well into their 30s like TE, or the one who has the shorter career with more and longer injuries like RB?

Doesn't seem that tough to me.

So since Caldwell made a bonehead move by overpaying for Ivory we should pass on one of the best RB prospects we've seen since AD? I don't follow this logic.

Im not saying pass on him because of Ivory, im saying pass on him because hes not worth it. I just wanted to remark on how terrible ivorys contract is.
So what we're saying is let the clock expire a few times until we get him at a comfortable salary

Exactly. Those guys get paid that much money because the league predicts they will be worth it.

If you're betting on LF to be your best guy at 4, paying him isn't the concern, it's hoping he pans out because the loss of production out of that pick is far more costly.

Funny how some people here only understand numbers and not the practical application of them.

That Ivory contract was atrocious. Dave's worst contract to date. I feel like Gus had some sort of influence on it. I think Gus really wanted a Marshawn Lynch type runner and saw a little of that in Ivory. Either way, never should have gotten that much, but he has very little guaranteed money total compared to rest of top 10, so atleast there's that.

So you should be worried about paying a guy top ten money because of what he might do in his 30's when his rookie contract has long been over.

Well shoot, who wouldn't understand that genius logic??

It wouldn't have been that bad if he wasn't banged up so often.

In free agency you have to overspend. I can't even count the comments about how the jags were so loaded with money....Or how about this year, Glock and KY both were calling the browns geniuses for paying 16mil for an extra second rounder because they wouldn't be able to spend all the money if they tried.

Now glock is here talking about how bad the ivory contract was.... At the time, we needed to spend the money. So it's ok when the browns waste money but not the jags?

Hilarious. People talking out of both sides of their mouths.

Why isn't he worth it? Please enlighten me.

Theyre not even remotely the same thing. The browns took on that contract for a short time to get a pick.

we actually valued Ivory to pay him that much and arent getting a pick in return, we didnt NEED to spend that money. Youre grasping at straws.

Man youre really not smart.

When a players rookie contract is over you want to sign them to a long term deal assuming they played up to their draft position. By the time leonards rookie contract is over youre re-signing a guy at the most physically detrimental position who wont be in his prime for much longer

versus a guy who plays a position that continually has guys playing their best for a long time.

With the 4th overall pick, you want guys who can be contributers for a decade or more. A TE is more likely to give you that over an RB.
