We might have a shot at being able to take the first defensive player on the board if this happens:
1. Titans: Tunsil
2. Browns: Wentz
3. Chargers: Stanley
4. Cowboys: Goff
Romo has broken the same left clavicle 3 times, and just came out and indicated he is deciding now, and likely will have, a "Mumford procedure". This procedure removes or shaves off some of the clavicle. If he does the procedure, he will likely miss most of the offseason. Combine this with his prior back injury(ies), and his age (36 in April), I think Dallas will look very hard at a QB with their first pick. With the Cowboy's Jerry Jones ego, I am sure they believe they won't be this high up in the draft again for some time.
If both the Browns and Cowboys do take quarterbacks and I think there's at least a 50% chance they do, the Jaguars will be sitting in a great position. At the least, two of these 3 players will be available: Bosa, Ramsay and Jack.
I kind of wish free agency was after the draft so the Jaguars could draft the BAP at 5 and then throw boatloads of money at the best free agent playing a position they didn't address high in the draft. Since that's not the case, they simply need to sign the best free agents available at these position groups (pass rusher, OTTO and free safety) and then draft accordingly.
Just listened to Bucky Brooks and, like many, he is extremely high on Ramsay. He compared him to Charles Woodson. He also likes Bosa a lot and feels he can be moved around to optimize his skills. Jack was not discussed, but most consider him the best athlete in he entire draft. If all three of these prospects even come close to reaching their potential, the Jaguars cannot lose.
So, what would be the best possible scenario if the 2 q.b. are taken ahead of the Jaguars' pick? Realistically, I don't see them signing more than 2 extremely high-priced free agents- not because of lack of money, but having to compete with 31 other teams. My choices would be:
Sign Malik Jackson and Olivier Vernon. Both are at their prime and the defensive line would be fixed.
Draft Ramsay in the first. Even if they don't sign or draft another corner, House and Colvin would be fine with Ramsay also in in secondary.
That leaves OTTO and they should be able to get a good one in the 2nd or 3rd round. There are several good prospects such as Schobert from Wisconsin who could be had in the 3rd or possibly 4th round if there is not good value in the 2nd.
Although I don't expect a lot of this to happen, it is fun to imagine. When your team has won about 12 games in 3 years the off-season can be more fun than the regular one. Hopefully that will change soon.
Doesn't this decrease our draft down potential? Maybe an early run on qbs gives us an extra pick or two to move down slightly.
Quote:Winning now? That team isn't very good, they're not a "player" away, they're several players away.
Cowboys are in a "winning now" mode. They were in a very close divisional playoff game against the Packers just 2 seasons ago when Romo was healthy all year.
The NFCE is not a good division (it's equivalent to the AFCS on the other side). Even with Romo hurt all season, the Cowboys were still in the "division hunt" almost until the end.
If Romo/Bryant stay healthy, they will likely win the NFCE again.
When it comes to their drafting though,, who knows what Jerry will do? You never know with that guy.

If the target is Noah Spence then I would be fine with a trade down. If the target is Ramsey, Jack or Bosa then you better stay put unless you have equal grades on all 3 and don't mind losing them.
Old Ask Victoria would say sit and pick. If you target a guy why risk it. Just pick.
Unless your getting the farm, I wouldn't trade out of 5.

The Cowboys might be in a "win now" mode but it doesn't mean they're capable of winning now, and certainly doesn't mean they're a legitimate Super Bowl contender because they're not. They just have way too many holes on the defensive side of the ball, not to mention the health of Tony Romo is always an issue Te smart move is to take a franchise QB prospect at 4 ( if one is available) setting themselves up for success for the next 10-15 years, isn't that more important than trying to win "right now"?
We need a top 5 talent. We need a major defensive play maker. Trading down this year, imo, is not a good idea. Years past, yes, because we needed so many players, this year isn't like that. You're odds greatly increase of getting a big time stud in the top 5.
Top 5 player > mid round/late round & additional pick.
I agree that it's very unlikely they would trade back this year unless they only have to move back 1 or 2 spots and feel their guy will still be there. Just seems like Ramsay, Bosa and Jack would all be hard to pass on due to their potential and that they all play at positions of high need. Spence certainly fits that category, but he may be too risky to take in the 1st round.
