Looking over the various mock drafts, most seem to have us taking Ramsey or Bosa at #5.
I suspect those of us who believe defense is the way to go would, for the most part, be happy with either of those picks.
But what if both are gone by 5?
I've seen some advocate Myles Jack (and I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to him at this point), but I'm seeing some mocks projecting us to take Buckner out of Oregon.
I haven't studied him much, but from what I've seen thus far, I am not sold on him as worth the #5 overall pick.
From what I see of him, he has good size (6'7, 290), long arms and pretty good upper body strength. From what I've been able to tell, if he gets his hands into a T's chest, he can get some movement and arm extension. However, these long arms and upper body strength don't seem to translate into beating tackles very often or pressure on QBs. I haven't seen many batted passes by him. He doesn't seem particularly explosive or sudden.
To me, he would seem to be a good fit for a 3-4 team who simply asks DEs to occupy blocks, or Odrick's spot in the Jaguars' scheme. But if your team is looking for pass rushers or play makers, I don't necessarily see him as the guy. Of course, the prevalence of the bubble screens, etc. in college offenses kind of skews things, IMO.
If there are any who have watched him extensively who would be willing to lend their views on him, I welcome your perspectives. But at this early stage, if Ramsey or Bosa or gone by 5, Buckner is lower on my priority list than other prospects.
Your thoughts on Buckner?
Like him, but he's a little bit of an odd scheme fit for the Jags. Especially at 5.
Need to watch more tape on him.
Analysts starting to say he improved as a rusher in 2015, but I haven't seen it yet in the little I've watched. Seems too stiff for Leo - but will watch some more to see where this analysis is coming from.

So you don't see him as much of a pass rusher, either?
To me, he's like a power guy without pass rush moves.

Edited post to relect question.^
Yeah - I see more power than bend - but I'm reading otherwise from analysts.
If he can create pressure with power in the league and Caldwell thinks the other side of his pass Rush skill set can improve, then maybe he's our guy.
Still a big question mark to me.
I want a guy that can step in and make plays right now.
I'd rather trade out and hope a QB is wanted by another team.
Buckner is talented enough to go this high, but his fit with the Jags would be fairly redundant. I can't imagine Dave would truly consider him with one of Ramsey/Bosa/Jack extremely likely to be available. I kinda think and definitely hope Dave would go Spence over him too.

He seems to have the physical tools-absent an array of pass rush moves-to be a first round pick.
He would seem the replacement for Odrick/Alualu more than anything. If the team wanted to address that position, I'd rather they sign Mario William at this point rather than draft Buckner.
Perhaps more study of him would change my opinion of him, but right now, a Buckner pick would make no sense for the Jaguars.

Not sure about trading out at that point. If Bosa and Ramsey are gone, I stay and take Jack if he's there, I think, absent a huge windfall we can't refuse. I think I would even consider Ronnie Stanley over Buckner.
I know we have a lot of holes, but I think we need more quality than quantity.
if only Jaylon Smith hadn't blown out his knee.
Sigh.
Mods please merge with Kiper Mock 2.0 thread.
I do see a decent swim/arm over move vs TCU.
In Mayock's top 5 by position, he has Buckner listed as the top interior defensive lineman, not an edge guy.
NFL.com's prospect summary describes him as the perfect body type for a 3-4 DE fit.

That makes sense, though I'm not sure I'd necessarily want him at DT either, at least not at that weight. He has the frame to get bigger, though.
If hadn't signed Odrick to a big deal I'd be more open to the idea, but I just don't see investing the 5th overall pick in a guy whom we already have more than capable guys to fill the same role. Too many needs on this defense to take another 5 tech early in the draft.

I'm almost positive Odrick's deal is essentially a 2 year deal. They can be out of it after this season with zero dead money.
If both Ramsey and Bosa are gone by #5...I would probably take Jack or maybe Spence (trade down)
To me, Buckner seems like more of a 3-4 end
I honestly like the DTs Billings and Robinson better than him.

Now I know Jack is a really good athlete, and he had some second team PAC 12 honors as a linebacker....but for me, I'm not sure I've seen enough of him playing linebacker to take that high.
Add to that LB isn't a premium position, and he isn't medically cleared for full participation in the combine, and I'm pretty skeptical about taking him top 10.
That's just me though, for what it's worth he should be a full participant at his pro day.
Oregon DE equals pass. 6-7 and at 281 he's a 3-4 DE. Not a great fit here.
